Good afternoon,
I would like to take a moment to address a matter of importance. As a commissioner, it is one of my duties to maintain transparency with our residents.
Recently, there were two articles published in our local paper, one in July and a follow-up this past weekend. I would like to emphasize that, as a commission, our primary focus is on supporting positive forward growth for our city and not encouraging dysfunction. The July article highlighted certain issues between our mayor and clerk of which are over a year old, but there were broader implications at play.
As a community, it is essential that we are aware when city officials are not fulfilling their obligations and are instead engaging in covert activities and promoting hidden agendas.
Regarding the July article, it contained numerous details suggesting an ongoing issue, which is inaccurate. We prefer not to continue to draw unnecessary public attention to the city based on a reporter's perception of a story. Manton is not a city where one should attempt to find a story by grasping at straws. If you are seeking a story, consider inquiring about updates on the splash pad/new playground, gas station, potential housing initiatives, or water infrastructure that our community is actively working towards some of which include grants.
It’s unnecessary to dwell on non-existent issue. Did the recent article mention the potential loss of $100,000? Yes, the city clerk provided this estimate when a fellow commissioner inquired about the total amount spent or lost due to the ransom attack, overtime for city staff, influx of a high number FOIA requests, disruptions of city beyond normal services, attorney fees, extra audits, etc… Does the total equal this amount? Not precisely. But again, if anyone has any questions please go in and talk to the city staff. City Staff are happy to share knowledge and experience about our city and how it runs. Please consider City Staff YOUR resource, the answer should always be the same regardless of the individual in these positions.
Regarding the article discussing the mayor’s absence from the August meeting, I can confirm that he was not present. Did the commission receive an email notification regarding his absence? No, we did not. While I understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise, as Mayor, it is essential to notify the board of such absences as it would be expected from myself or the 5 other commissioners. Furthermore, my comment in the paper regarding the mayor’s failure to provide a report in months is accurate. We hold all our department heads to the same standard, requiring them to submit written reports monthly as voted on by the City Commission. However, we have not received a report from the mayor. As a city official, I believe it is our responsibility to provide the public with explanations for such omissions.
As a commissioner and resident, I prioritize our town's well-being and the people who genuinely seek positive change. I appreciate the community's enthusiasm for supporting one another and promoting the best interests of our city. If you have questions, please attend a meeting or contact a city commissioner. We are committed to serving the people of this remarkable city, which I am proud to call my home.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Wilkins.
