In early September, dedicated refuge volunteers completed the annual late‑summer clean‑out of the Purple Martin housing at Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Audrey Whitlock and Gerry and Karen Lebing generously donated their time and effort, lowering the structures and clearing out grass, twigs, eggshells, and other debris.
The Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society, the refuge’s Friends support group, purchased the Purple Martin housing in 2021 through donations. Since then, volunteers have been essential to its upkeep. Each spring, the Lebings prepare the housing for arriving Purple Martins, ensuring a safe, clean habitat for one of the refuge’s most cherished migratory species.
This work underscores the vital role volunteers play in the success of refuge projects. Their dedication, skill, and stewardship make a significant difference for wildlife and for the community that values these natural spaces.

The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center will be closed for the rest of today, Saturday, September 12 due to the power outage affecting Hatteras Island.

Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is home to a large population of wild black bears, providing great opportunities for wildlife viewing. When on the refuge, it's important to put the welfare of both people and animals first and foremost.

Responsible wildlife viewing looks like:
🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌🚌 Using binoculars or a zoom lens to view wildlife from a distance—at least 100 yards (the length of eight school buses).
⬅ Moving back if wildlife approaches you. This is important when viewing from vehicles as well: allowing an animal to approach close to a vehicle may reduce its fear of vehicles, putting it at risk of vehicle strikes and incidents with humans.
🕑 Watching an animal for a few minutes, then moving on so the animal has time to use that area without human presence.

Remember that it's illegal to feed, touch, or tease wildlife. All visitors can do their part to ensure these lands stay a refuge for animals and people!

Least Tern
PEA ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

The Least Tern is a tiny, energetic shorebird known for its sharp dives along coastal shallows to catch small fish. On Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, Least Terns nest across broad stretches of beach and dune tops, from the Canal Zone to areas east of Etheridge Bridge, where refuge biologists regularly survey their colonies. Their eggs typically hatch in about three weeks, but on Pea Island these little birds face heavy pressure from coyotes, prompting creative protection efforts like sonic repellents and expanded nesting closures to help safeguard their chicks. Least Terns migrate long distances, arriving from wintering grounds in Central and South America and departing again in late summer as they follow warm coastal waters southward.

Do you hunt Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge?

Hunt permits for Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge are now on sale through Recreation.gov! Hunters can purchase permits for themselves or others--just fill out the appropriate hunter's information and pay online. You can carry a print or digital copy of the permit, as long as it's accessible without cell service.

Don't forget to also carry a signed hunting brochure--2026 brochures are now available on the refuge website!

Joe Pye and Butterfly

Coastal Joe Pye w**d is a native perennial wetland wildflower currently in bloom on Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. It grows exclusively in poorly drained, saturated soils and thrives in full sunlight, often reaching heights of more than six feet. The species consistently blooms late in the growing season, providing an important burst of color and ecological activity when many other wetland plants have finished flowering. Its pink flower clusters attract a wide variety of butterflies and bees, including Palamedes Swallowtails, shown in the attached photo. Although the word w**d is often associated with unwanted plants, in botanical and ecological contexts it can simply describe a wild, naturally occurring plant rather than an invasive or harmful one. Joe Pye w**d is an excellent example: despite the name, it is not a nuisance species. Instead, it is a valued native wildflower that plays a vital role in wetland ecosystems. The term w**d reflects traditional common naming rather than ecological worth. Joe Pye w**d is especially significant for pollinators. Its large, nectar-rich flower heads support butterflies, bees, and other insects during late summer and early fall—a critical time when nectar sources begin to decline. Joe Pye flowers remain attractive well into maturity, eventually forming fluffy seed heads that persist through winter and are eaten by songbirds. This extended flowering and seeding period makes the plant valuable not only for pollination but also for wildlife food availability.

🦆: Lottery registration for Late-season Waterfowl Hunt permits opens September 1 at 10am. Youth Hunt permits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis starting September 1. Lottery results will be available in early November.

Meadow Beauty is a striking native wildflower found on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, flourishing on the poorly drained soils along refuge roads where sunlight abounds. These perennial plants typically reach about 2 feet in height, emerging from underground tubers and often spreading to form loose colonies. In summer, from July through September, they display brilliant magenta-pink flowers—each bearing four broad petals around a circle of eight dramatically curved yellow anthers atop reddish filaments. Unusually, these flowers are pollen-rich but nectarless, relying on 'buzz pollination' by bumblebees—the bees vibrate the flower to extract pollen, making them highly effective pollinators. While bees collect pollen, butterflies and moths often visit the blooms, adding to the biodiversity supported by this species. As summer ends, the petals fall and the flowers mature into distinctive urn-shaped seed capsules. These capsules start green, turning coppery brown and brittle in autumn. Once dry, they rattle when gently shaken—an intriguing natural seed dispersal mechanism.

Apex Predator - Great Horned Owl
Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge

Great Horned Owls have long been portrayed as the classic storybook “wise old owl,” with their deep hooting calls and imposing ear tufts. However, this familiar image contrasts sharply with their true nature. In reality, Great Horned Owls are fearless, highly aggressive apex predators capable of taking remarkably large prey. Their diet commonly includes other raptors such as Ospreys and Peregrine Falcons, along with ducks, geese, and even other owl species. These powerful hunters also pursue mammals like rabbits, skunks, raccoons, opossums, and squirrels, as well as reptiles, amphibians, and insects. Their exceptional low‑light vision and finely tuned hearing allow them to detect prey beneath snow, dense vegetation, or thick brush—even in total darkness. This combination of sensory acuity and strength makes the Great Horned Owl one of North America’s most formidable nocturnal predators. At Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Great Horned Owls are a regular highlight for birders and wildlife observers. Refuge reports note that owls may be heard or even seen at dusk, and participants in Wings Over Water Encore trips specifically scan for Great Horned, Barred, and Eastern Screech‑Owls during evening wildlife surveys. The refuge’s expansive wetlands, wooded pocosin habitat, and agricultural fields support abundant prey species such as sparrows, Northern Cardinals, Indigo Buntings, American Pipits, and even large mammals like American Black Bears, coyotes, and bobcats—creating ideal hunting grounds for Great Horned Owls. Together, these characteristics make the Great Horned Owl not only an iconic species of North America but also an integral and awe‑inspiring part of the rich wildlife community thriving at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge.

Skimming Off the Top- Black Skimmers
PEA ISLAND NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Black Skimmers are striking shorebirds recognized by their crisp black‑and‑white plumage and bright orange legs and upper bill. What makes them truly unique is their remarkable feeding technique—the only one of its kind in the bird world. As they fly low over the water, Black Skimmers drop their elongated lower bill beneath the surface and locate fish entirely by touch, snapping their upper bill shut the instant they make contact. Because this method doesn’t rely on sight, Skimmers can feed even at night. At Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, they are primarily warm‑weather residents. In recent seasons only small roosting groups have been observed, with only one nest documented this year. Unfortunately the nest and eggs were lost to the elements before they became viable.
