Fish Friday!
The first five blue marlin caught off Cape Hatteras...
July 25, 1940, news had spread to Beaufort that a 286 pound blue marlin was landed off Cape Hatteras by George Sutton of Washington D.C. on board the Hatteras vessel Albatross, Captain Ernal Foster. According to reports, this would be the 3rd blue marlin landed off the Cape. Records indicate that the first blue marlin was caught July 2, 1938 by Hugh Rutherford of New York City on Mako II, Captain Emi Eggeman of New Jersey and mate Loyd Styron of Hatteras. The fish weighed 439.5 pounds. The second blue marlin taken off Cape Hatteras was done so by Marshall Dana of New York on Mako III, Captain Loyd Styron. The fish weighed 593.5 pounds.
The fourth blue marlin caught in the area was by Captain Ernal Foster on Albatross II. The fish weighed 475 pounds. The fifth was caught on July 13, 1952 by Betsy Walker of Richmond, Virginia, also on Captain Foster's Albatross II. She was recorded to be the first woman to catch a blue marlin off Cape Hatteras. The fish weighed 367.5 pounds.
