You’re invited to Dare County Parks & Recreation’s Family Fun in the Park Block Party!

On Friday, July 17, 2026 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., this FREE event- featuring a cookout, games, emergency vehicle displays and scavenger hunts- will take place along Mustian Street in Kill Devil Hills.

🅿️ Where to park?
Please park at First Flight Elementary School (107 Veterans Drive, Kill Devil Hills). The parking lot at Family Recreation Park will be roped off for emergency services vehicle displays and pedestrians.

🌭 Come for dinner!
Enjoy grilled hotdogs, courtesy of Dare County Parks & Recreation, while supplies last.

🎾 Bring your game face!
Booths and facilities at Family Recreation Park, along Mustian Street and through Aviation Park will offer an array of free games and scavenger hunts. Be sure to wear a swimsuit to take advantage of a water slide!

🗺️ Complete a map to enter prize drawings!
Look for the Dare County Parks & Recreation welcome table at the Veterans Drive entrance to Family Recreation Park (between the baseball fields) to pick up a map. Have your map stamped at each stop, and turn it in when you're finished to be entered to win fantastic prizes!

🚒 Work Vehicle Displays!
Get up close with emergency services vehicles including Kill Devil Hills fire trucks, Dare County EMS ambulances, Dare County Parks & Recreation field maintenance equipment and more!

First, be sure that you know how to swim well before you enter the ocean. The ocean just isn’t the same as swimming in a pool.

🌊 Swim near a lifeguard.
🌊 Have a buddy with you and take a floatation device that will help you if you become tired or get caught in a rip current.
🌊 Avoid swimming at dawn or dusk.
🌊 If the weather conditions show that a storm is approaching or you hear thunder, immediately move off the beach and seek safe shelter to avoid lightning strikes.

Increased Risk of Wildfire Due to Elevated Fire Danger -- Thursday, June 18, 2026

The National Weather Service has issued fire danger statements for central and eastern North Carolina. What does increased fire danger mean for you today?

🎯 Fires can start from the smallest spark.
🎯 Dry conditions and wind increase fire spread.
🎯 Everyday activities carry more risk right now.

Avoid burning, and be cautious with anything that could cause a spark. Properly dispose of smoking materials such as ci******es. Be extremely careful with machinery and farm equipment when working outdoors.

Get ready to Unearth a Story this summer at the Dare County Library!

Registration for the FREE 2026 Summer Reading Program is now open, running through July 31.

Children can earn prizes for reading, enjoy exciting programs and activities, and explore this year’s theme of all things underground, hidden and discovered—from dinosaurs and treasure to fairy hollows and ocean depths!

Register online and view a list of events at DareNC.gov/SummerReading.

Adults are included in the fun too! By completing one activity from each reading challenge level, adult readers can enter to win a small prize and an entry to the library’s prize drawing. The 2026 Adult Summer Reading Challenge runs through August 15.

Meet our Outer Banks SPCA Pet of the Week, Penny!

This sweet 2-year-old girl came from another shelter where she didn't have much of a chance at being adopted. She may be a little shy when you first meet her, but give her a moment and you'll see her silly side come out. Penny has a fun, playful personality, loves soaking up attention, and has done well with other dogs!

Congratulations to the winners of the 2026 Professor Faucet Coloring Contest!

More than 75 students from kindergarten through high school showcased their creativity and water conservation knowledge in Dare County’s first-ever Professor Faucet Coloring Contest. After reviewing all of the outstanding entries, Dare County Water Department staff selected four winners:

Each winner received two complimentary tickets to H2OBX Waterpark!

If you ever find yourself caught in a rip current, remember that rip currents pull you out, not under.
✔️ Don’t panic or swim against the current.
✔️ Wave for help.
✔️ Stay afloat. Try to relax and float with the current until it weakens.
✔️ Swim parallel to the shore.
✔️ Once you no longer feel the pull of the current, you can begin swimming to shore.

Join us in congratulating Elizabeth “Liz” Farmer, Dare County’s Employee of the Month for June 2026!

Liz serves as a Telecommunicator for the Dare County 911 Communications Center, where she answers emergency and non-emergency calls, gathers critical information from callers and dispatches law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel throughout Dare, Hyde and Tyrrell counties.

Since joining Dare County in 2015, Liz has earned the respect of her coworkers through her professionalism, compassion and positive attitude. Colleagues describe her as dependable, supportive and someone who helps keep both callers and coworkers calm during even the most stressful situations.

The Employee of the Month award was presented to Liz by Dare County 911 Communications Center Director Captain David Saffell during the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

Captain Saffell praised Liz’s professionalism and dedication, noting, “Her positive attitude, strong work ethic and unwavering support of her coworkers make her an invaluable member of our team.”

Since joining Dare County in 2015, Liz has earned the admiration of her coworkers for her compassion, professionalism and ability to remain calm under pressure. Colleagues describe her as dependable, supportive and someone who helps keep both callers and coworkers calm during even the most challenging situations.

The ocean is a beautiful, wild and natural environment. The animals living in the ocean are enjoying their beach day just as much as you!

Check out these helpful marine safety tips from the N.C. Aquarium on Roanoke Island Public Programs Educator Abbey Vinson.
✔️ Avoid swimming at dawn and dusk.
✔️ Do the “stingray shuffle”. Shuffle your feet as you move through the surf to alert stingrays to your presence.
✔️ Be careful not to touch jellyfish that have washed ashore.
✔️ Check in with the lifeguard for daily reports on marine animal activity.

Live like a local. Love the beach, and respect the ocean.
