Attention Veterans: A VA Disability Claims Clinic could be coming to Dare or Currituck County in Fall 2026, but organizers need your input first.

The clinic would provide direct access to VA representatives who can help with:
✅ Filing new disability claims
✅ Checking claim status
✅ Answering questions about VA benefits and resources

Veterans from Dare, Currituck, Tyrrell, Hyde, Camden, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Hertford, and surrounding Virginia communities are encouraged to complete a brief interest survey, located at DareNC.gov/Veterans.

Your response will help demonstrate community demand and could bring these important services closer to home.

Digging in the sand is more dangerous than it seems. Every year, people suffocate in collapsed holes and tunnels on beaches.

🚫 Never dig a hole deeper than it is wide. Keep them no deeper than knee-height.
🌊 Remember to fill in any holes before leaving the beach to ensure everyone's safety.
🕳️ Large sand holes hinder emergency rescues by lifeguards.
🐢 During sea turtle nesting season (May-September), these holes are deadly obstacles for nesting turtles and hatchlings.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, often a weekend filled with family get-togethers and cookouts. However, the true meaning is a more solemn occasion. It’s a day of remembrance to honor our fallen and the sacrifice made by the men and women who died during their service in the United States military.

On this day, Americans across the country celebrate the brave servicemen and servicewomen who died defending our nation. This holiday is a special time to honor our history and commemorate the bravery and courage of our troops. May their courage inspire us to live with purpose and gratitude. It should never be forgotten that the freedom we enjoy came at the expense of those brave heroes who lost their lives fighting to protect it.

Please take a moment out of your day to say a special prayer for our fallen and their families.

Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from shore. They typically extend from the shoreline, through the surf zone, and past the line of breaking waves.

Certain tide conditions can increase rip currents to dangerous speeds. People get in trouble when they are moved so far offshore that they are unable to get back to the shore because of fear, panic, exhaustion or inefficient swimming skills.

Lifeguards are trained to identify these hazards. Always swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask a lifeguard about the conditions before entering the water.

To ensure that you and your family have a fun-filled, worry-free vacation at the beach, follow these simple tips from Hatteras Island Rescue Beach Patrol Supervisor Molly Greenwood.
🌊 Rip currents are always a threat. Swim near a lifeguard and never swim alone.
⛱️ Tilt your umbrella into the wind and bury the pole 2+ feet deep.
👀 Keep a close eye on your kids.
🕳️ Do not dig holes deeper than your knees and always fill them in before you leave the beach.

It is important to know the hazards that may exist and what steps you can take to prepare your property to reduce the risks of flood damage.

Flooding can occur during storm events such as hurricanes or simply from heavy rainfall and poor drainage of soil conditions. Floods can happen any time, anywhere. Prepare now.

Visit DareNC.gov/Flood for more information regarding planning for flood hazards in Dare County.

The quickest and most efficient way to get help when you need it is to know your exact location.

🚑 Take note of the street address of your accommodations—not the house name.
🚑 Pay attention to the street you access the beach from, the beach access name or what milepost you are closest to. Every second counts in an emergency!
🚑 If available, send someone to meet the first responders at the nearest access point to help emergency responders locate you quickly.

May 17, 2026 to May 23, 2026 is Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week! We are grateful to our EMS teams for providing lifesaving care for our residents and visitors 24/7!

In honor of EMS week, we would like to congratulate Dare County EMS’s newest paramedic graduates. Dare County EMS recently celebrated seven employees who completed College of The Albemarle’s Advanced EMT to Paramedic program—an accelerated internal academy designed to help staff advance their credentials while continuing to serve the community.

Graduates include Jessica Ball, Kirsten “Schae” Britt, Mason Cobb, Ethan Jones, Callista “Callie” Louvros, William “Garrett” Porter, and Hunter Suter.

Please join us in congratulating these graduates on this outstanding achievement!
