At Saturday's 27th annual Minority Health Fair CASA Program Director Brooke Henwood shared information about the important role of Court Appointed Special Advocates in advocating for the best interests of children whose parents are involved with Richland County Juvenile Court. Additionally, Judge Steve McKinley addressed the crowd to share his Family Stability Initiative. The event was sponsored by the NAACP #3190 with leadership by Health Committee Chair, Danielle Saffold, who also serves our community as a CASA Volunteer, advocating for eleven children since being sworn in nearly three years ago. During our recent CASA training, we highlighted the impactful work taking place right here in Richland County!

Judge Steve McKinley introduced the Family Stability Initiative, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to empowering youth and strengthening families throughout our community. This initiative represents a meaningful step forward in creating long-term, positive outcomes for the children and families we serve.

Chief Magistrate Karen Cannon also led an engaging and informative session on how to be an effective witness when testifying—equipping our volunteers with the knowledge, confidence, and practical tools needed to advocate strongly for the children in their care.

We are grateful for the dedication of our CASA volunteers and proud to support them as they continue to make a lasting difference.

In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, the team at the Richland County Juvenile Court, led by Judge Steve McKinley, proudly wore blue.

We were joined by the dedicated teachers at our Detention Center, who also showed their support. We stood together to raise awareness and advocate for the safety and well-being of children in our community.

Looking for a way to make a real difference in a young person’s life?

The AIM Program (Advocate, Intervene & Mentoring) at Richland County Juvenile Court is helping youth find a positive path forward—without out-of-home placement or incarceration. Many of the young people we serve are at a critical turning point, where guidance, support, and someone who believes in them can change everything.

Mentors spend up to 10 hours a week with youth, helping them reach their goals while providing consistency, encouragement, and accountability. You’ll also have the opportunity to support them in family meetings, court hearings, and school conferences.

Your time could be the turning point in someone’s story.

Interested or know someone who would be a great mentor?

Judge Steve McKinley recently met with staff at Richland County Children Services to talk about the Family Stability Initiative and the impact it can have on strengthening families in our community. During the discussion, he shared the 10 principles of the initiative and how a commitment to those principles can help empower youth and support stronger family relationships.

The Family Stability Initiative is a family-based, community-wide, long-term approach to helping children impacted by broken family structures. Through collaboration across Richland County, agencies can better support families and help create stable, safe environments for children.
