Mansfield State Historic Site American Civil War Battlefield Site in Northwest Louisiana - Nathaniel Banks vs. Richard Taylor

Mansfield State Historic Site preserves a portion of the Mansfield Civil War battlefield, where the battle of Mansfield or Sabine Crossroads occurred on April 8, 1864. The engagement was one of the largest Civil War battles fought west of the Mississippi, involving almost 30,000 troops. Our park features an interpretive center and museum with exhibits, displays, and artifacts, along with an outdoo

r picnic area and one-mile battlefield walking trail with interpretive stops. Park staff also conduct ranger-led interpretive programs; be sure to check our events listing for the latest offerings.

Ironclads. Tinclads. Gunboats. Submarines.
The rivers of the Civil War were battlefields of innovation, danger, and incredible courage—and we’re diving deep into their stories.

Over the coming weeks, follow along as we spotlight legendary vessels like the USS Benton, USS Cairo, USS Lexington, CSS Missouri, CSS H. L. Hunley, and many more. From the Red River Campaign to Vicksburg and Mobile Bay, each post will explore the ships, crews, battles, and moments that shaped the war in the western waters.

⚓ Discover the technology that changed naval warfare
⚓ Learn the stories of daring commanders and crews
⚓ Explore the campaigns fought across the Mississippi, Red River, Yazoo, and beyond
⚓ See how these vessels helped shape history

The series will conclude this August with a special on-site program where we’ll bring these stories to life and explore the legacy of Civil War naval warfare together.

Stay tuned for the first ship spotlight and follow the series as we journey through the rivers that changed the course of the Civil War.
