It is time to recognize our correctional staff during National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, May 3–9, 2026!

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5187, creating “National Correctional Officers’ Week”. In 1996 Congress officially changed the name of the week to National Correctional Officers and Employees Week. Since then, the first full week in May is recognized annually as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week, commemorating the contributions of correctional officers and personnel who work in jails, prisons, and community corrections across the country.

The correctional officer profession is one of the most challenging careers one can pursue. You keep our citizens and our communities safe. You wear many hats from day to day. Many people outside these walls truly do not understand what you face daily, often at great personal risk. You are among the most capable, committed, and patient public servants in the world. In recent years, your responsibilities have become increasingly challenging. Your very important work often goes overlooked and unappreciated; you often do not receive the recognition you well deserve. Your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed- thank you for making a difference.

Richland County appropriately recognizes the many contributions and accomplishments of these men and women who are a vital component of our community

Thank you to all the correctional officers and employees representing the Richland County Sheriff’s Office.

YOU ARE APPRECIATED!

This week, we recognize and thank the dedicated professionals in our Records Division and Crime Lab for all that they do behind the scenes to keep our operations running smoothly.

Our Records staff are the backbone of information management, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely access to critical data that supports deputies, investigators, and our community. Their attention to detail and commitment to excellence do not go unnoticed.

Our Crime Lab and Property Room personnel play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of evidence. From careful documentation to secure storage and processing, their work is essential to the success of investigations and the pursuit of justice.

While much of their work happens out of the public eye, their impact is felt every single day across our agency.

Thank you for your professionalism, dedication, and service. We appreciate everything you do.

This week, The Richland County Sheriff's Office recognizes and celebrates National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. April 12 through 18 honors the responders who manage 911 calls. They are the first point of contact in a 911 situation.

Our dispatchers are the calm in the chaos. They are the first voice someone hears on their worst day, and the steady presence guiding both callers and first responders through critical situations. Every call they take has the potential to save a life, and that responsibility is something they carry with professionalism and strength every day.

Behind the scenes, they constantly multitask across seven or more screens, make split-second decisions, and coordinate resources to ensure public safety, and enable our deputies, officers, and first responders to do their jobs safely and efficiently. Their work often goes unseen, but its impact is felt across Richland County.

Not just this week, but every week, we thank our dispatchers for their dedication, resilience, and commitment to public safety. We are proud of the work they do and grateful to have them as part of our team.

Thank you, Richland County Dispatch, for the work you do for our office and for our community.
