A name in a yearbook. A name on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. A young man from Mansfield who never made it home.

VFW Post 3494 Commander, Navy veteran, and Mansfield City Schools Intervention Specialist Reba Rice recently traveled to Washington, D.C., aboard an Honor Bus to honor Richard E. Lomax, a member of the MSHS Class of 1964 and a POW/MIA Vietnam War veteran.

Before the trip, Mrs. Rice and the Manhigan yearbook staff found Richard’s senior yearbook. Its pages were filled with handwritten tributes from students, staff, and Honor Bus riders before it was placed at the Wall in his honor.

More than 60 years after Richard walked the halls of Mansfield Senior High, a new generation helped carry his memory home.

Richard E. Lomax, your hometown remembers you. Your story matters. You will never be forgotten.

The candy bar project is getting sweeter. 🍫

Recently, students in Ms. Doup’s and Ms. Murphy’s classes put their taste buds to work with a chocolate tasting, then used what they learned to decide which ingredients they wanted to include in their very own candy bar creations.

There was plenty of sampling, comparing and decision-making along the way, all leading up to the fun part: designing a candy bar that’s completely their own.

Attendance isn’t just about being in a seat. It’s about keeping students connected, supported and moving forward. 🧡🐯

As Attendance Awareness Month continues, we’re helping families understand what happens when absences begin to add up. In Ohio, a student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school year, whether those absences are excused or unexcused.

At Mansfield, the goal isn’t simply to track missed days. It’s to partner with families early, understand what may be getting in the way and help students get back on track before those missed days become missed opportunities.

The wait felt like forever, but the moment was worth it! 🦋

Mrs. Barnet’s second graders at John Sherman Elementary watched three caterpillars form chrysalids and emerge as beautiful monarch butterflies. After observing their new friends and, of course, giving each one a name, the class headed outside to release them.

Learning about the monarch life cycle is exciting. Watching it unfold right in your own classroom makes it unforgettable!

Hello Tyger Families,
There's a certain energy that settles into our schools once the first few weeks of the year are behind us. The nerves of the first day have faded, routines are starting to take hold, and our hallways and classrooms are full of the kind of everyday momentum that makes this such a special place to learn and work.

A few weeks into the school year, I want to highlight two stories that show what it means when a community shows up for its schools.

Keeping Our Students Safe on the Road

Mansfield City Schools has partnered with the Mansfield Police Department to mount cameras on school buses, using a $16,317 Ohio bus safety grant. Eleven buses are now equipped, capturing front and rear footage of drivers who illegally pass a stopped bus while children are boarding or exiting. Drivers can flag violations with the push of a button, giving police clear evidence to act on.

The need is real: more than 65 violations occur in our district each year, and cameras caught 16 more in just the first week of school, 12 of which have already led to charges. We're grateful for this partnership and are pursuing additional grants to outfit our entire fleet. Nothing matters more than getting every student home safely.

Community Support Fuels Classroom Innovation

Our teachers are also getting a boost from the Richland County Foundation, which recently approved more than $130,000 in education grants for K-12 teachers countywide. Mansfield City Schools led the way with 29 teachers receiving grants — the largest group of any district — for projects ranging from Scholastic News subscriptions to reading programs to STEM and career-pathway initiatives.

Both stories point to the same truth: our progress depends on partners who believe in our students, from local police to community foundations.

This is TYger history you can actually hold in your hands. 🧡🐯

For our final Feel Good Friday, we’re taking a look back nearly 100 years.

Former Mansfield City Schools principal Mr. Kinton recently entrusted MSHS with an incredible collection of rare artifacts, photos and newspaper clippings that preserve pieces of Mansfield Senior High history dating back to the 1920s.

Among them are memories of the MSHS band competing at the 1927 Ohio School Band Contest, historic photos, handwritten notes and stories of the Tygers who walked these halls generations before us.

These aren’t just old photographs and newspaper clippings. They’re pieces of the people, traditions and pride that helped build TYger Nation.

We’re incredibly honored to preserve them and make sure these stories continue to be shared for generations to come.

Thank you, Mr. Kinton, for trusting us with such a special piece of our history.

Nearly a century later, the TYger pride is still here. TYger Nation is forever. 🧡

A little old-school skill is making a pretty great comeback. ✍️🧡

For this Feel Good Friday, we’re celebrating students in Ms. Doup’s and Ms. Murphy’s classes who have been putting in the time to learn the entire lowercase cursive alphabet.

Cursive isn’t taught nearly as often as it once was, which makes it even more fun to see these students slowing down, practicing each letter and watching their handwriting come together.

It takes patience. It takes practice. And judging by their work, it’s paying off beautifully.

That’s something worth feeling good about. 🐯

On Patriot Day, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the courage of the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless acts of service and compassion that followed.

Miss Gundrum’s kindergarteners turned number recognition into a game by rolling the dice, finding the matching number on their apple cards, and covering it with a chip.

Rulers out, candy wrappers next. 📏🍫

Students in Ms. Doup’s and Ms. Murphy’s third grade classes practiced measuring all kinds of classroom items as they sharpened their ruler skills.

That practice is setting them up for a fun challenge later this week, when they’ll measure, cut and design their own candy bar wrappers to WRAP up their candy unit.

A pretty sweet way to bring math and creativity together. 🐯
