The second phase of our Wastewater Treatment Facility upgrade project is underway! The East Stack Filter shutdown commenced at the end of April. The stack filters provide most of the wastewater treatment and are filled with 11 layers of synthetic media, 20-feet deep, that provides a large surface area for the growth of aerobic bacteria as part of the secondary treatment process. This old media is currently being removed and will eventually be replaced with new media as a part of the rehabilitation process.

A few weeks ago, MPU staff and Commissioners joined other utilities, along with the Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin, for a Day at the Capitol. They had an opportunity to visit with legislators to discuss utility industry topics such as affordability, infrastructure and power supply, and regulations. We’re grateful for this time to be able to advocate for the needs of our customers.

The storm on Sunday afternoon created some challenging, and time-consuming, outages to restore, but we’re so grateful to our staff, mutual aid crews (Village of Gresham and New London Utilities), and emergency services for their dedication and hard work! We appreciate our customers’ patience as we navigated through each unique situation. For more details on the outages, see the press release here: https://www.mpu.org/power-outages-sunday-may-17th/.

3:45PM: Most customers are now back in power, the remaining few needing additional work before a reconnection can be made. Thank you to our emergency services for keeping scenes safe until we could arrive, thank you to our mutual aid crews from the Village of Gresham and New London Utilities, and thank you to our customers for your patience. More details and pictures will be shared tomorrow!

10:40AM: The large outage has been restored. Pesky black birds were the cause! About 35 customers remain out of power from last night's storm. Crews continue to work towards complete restoration. We're so grateful to our mutual crews from Village of Gresham and New London Utilities who are helping restore power.

10:25AM: A new large outage has occurred in the SW quadrant of the City. Crews are headed to the area to identify the cause and work towards restoration.

May 18 7:05AM: Less than 40 customers remain out of power, with about half being a part of one specific outage. Crews continue to work through the remaining complex areas towards complete restoration.

8:35PM: Crews continue to triage and work through the remaining outages. Many are complex restorations that involve broken poles, lines down, etc. and will take time to fully restore. Thank you for your continued patience.

5:35PM: About 90% of the affected customers should be back in power. Crews are now working on multiple broken poles, lines down, and individual or smaller outages. Please STAY AWAY from downed lines or poles, the lines could be energized, and be cautious as you drive. Thank you for your patience as we work towards full restoration.

4:00PM: MPU is aware of multiple outages throughout our service territory due to the weather. Our crews are working as quickly as safety allows to restore power. Further updates will be made at https://www.mpu.org/current-outages/. Thank you for your patience.
