City of Manitowoc Police Department reports results from Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign

Manitowoc, WI — The Manitowoc Police Department joined agencies across Wisconsin and the nation to raise awareness about seat belt safety during the annual Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement campaign.

From May 18-31, officers conducted 252 traffic stops for various violations to include seat belt violations. From these traffic stops; 52 citations and 199 written warnings were issued by Manitowoc Police Officers. These interactions provided our patrol officers an opportunity to educate drivers and passengers on the importance of seat belt usage.

This year’s Click It or Ticket campaign’s goal was to increasing seat belt usage. The City of Manitowoc Police Department strives to help keep our fellow community members safe and reminded drivers of the importance of buckling up. Issuing tickets was not our goal, but it was a way to remind people of the importance of the simple action that can save a life.

The campaign coincided with the Memorial Day holiday, which is an especially busy and dangerous time on the roads.

Wearing a seat belt is required by law in Wisconsin and it’s one of the most effective ways to protect drivers and passengers from injury or death in a crash.

Responsible Herbicide and Fertilizer use on Lawns

The City would like to remind residents to use fertilizers and herbicides responsibly and sparingly on and around their yards. The City does receive complaints of fertilizer on the sidewalk and in the street. Fertilizers are applied more frequently and many of them contain herbicides.

Chemicals and w**d killers are not needed for a healthy lawn, and they’re one of the main causes of green algae in our lakes and streams.

Think before you buy. Get a soil test so you know if your lawn needs more nutrients. Mulch to keep the lawn healthy, so that it can out compete w**ds for light, nutrients and water. If you fertilize, do it in the fall and sweep up fertilizer that falls in the street and sidewalk. Fertilizers in the street end up in the lake.

When applying herbicides follow the directions on the label. Post notices on your lawn so that others are aware of them and can avoid the area. Many people are highly sensitive to lawn chemicals and need to avoid these areas.

Unlawful to Deposit Grass Clippings in City Streets

The City of Manitowoc is asking residents to keep all grass clippings or other yard waste out of the City streets and alleys. When mowing your lawn please direct the blower away from the street and clean up any grass clippings that make it there.

Proper disposal of your yard debris is a simple yet significant way to help reduce storm water pollution. When debris enters the storm sewer inlets, it becomes wet and quickly decomposes adding unnecessary nutrients to our storm water system, which ultimately discharges to our streams, river and the lake. These excessive nutrients reduce the clarity, and the quality of the waters we all enjoy.

Not only does this activity have a degrading effect on our water quality, but it also costs us tax dollars. Grass that is picked up by the street sweepers needs to be sent to the landfill. Grass clippings, leaves, sediment and other debris can plug the storm pipes and can cause flooding.

********* ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE ********

Viebahn Street from South 10th St. to Lakeside Blvd. is scheduled for street reconstruction work and the project is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 8th.

The Road will be Closed to all Traffic during the project.

Access to the UW Green Bay – Manitowoc Campus shall be from South 10th Street to the south of Viebahn St.

Vinton Construction Company will be the prime contractor for the project.

It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed and the street reopened to traffic on or about August 21st.

The City of Manitowoc will have a one-time STORM RELATED debris/brush pickup.

The city crews will only come through once and will be focused on the north side of the city. If you have storm related debris on the south side of the city, please contact the Department of Public Works. All material must be on the curb by Tuesday of next week. Debris cannot exceed 5 feet in length or 6 inches in diameter.
