What is a Living Book? ( 5 ) Features to Consider

1. . The book must be somewhat INTELLECTUAL to give us TRUTH, even if simply presented in a picture book.

2. . When literature is ETHICAL we are well-nourished with noble ideas and invited to exercise Biblical DISCERNMENT.

3. . When the writing is ARTISTIC it makes its appeal with a touch of human emotion.

4. . Something of BEAUTY in its style, or in its description, warms up the IMAGINATION.

5. . Living books alive with IDEAS, have a certain amount of PLAY in them – in that they satisfy curiosity while at the same time, ENLIVEN it.

This video from The Good and the Beautiful talks about how books have changed over the last two centuries. I highly recommend taking the time to watch it. The things she talks about in this video are the reasons I am passionate about choosing only books that are ‘worthy’ for my library, and to make them available for other home school families.
