Under the direction of the Probate Court Judge providing court recording services in Probate Court, 85th District Court, Sobriety Court, and Family Division of Circuit Court. Utilizes recording equipment to make a verbatim record of Court proceedings and simultaneously provide zoom and YouTube functions as required. Prepares typewritten transcripts of Court proceedings and maintains related record. Serves as judicial paralegal-secretary to the 85th District Court Judge, which includes transcribing correspondence and Orders, screening visitors and telephone calls, legal research as directed, scheduling appointments, and performing other related paralegal support functions. Serves as a multipurpose Clerk in District Court for processing all types of cases (both criminal and civil) when not otherwise in Court, preparing transcripts, or performing judicial paralegal-secretary functions.

Manistee County currently has an opening for the full-time position of District Court Probation Officer in the District Court of the Manistee County Courthouse. Under the supervision of the District Court Judge and Magistrate/Court Administrator, the Probation Officer conducts investigations, prepares reports, performs pre-trial assessments, prepares documentation, and makes recommendations regarding probationers failing to comply with their probation to assist the Judge in sentencing. Reviews, develops and implements treatment programs for individuals placed on probation in an effort to rehabilitate them and prevent future violations. Supervises and counsels probationers and ensures that all conditions of probation are met.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Under the direction and supervision of the County Administrator (s), the Public Defender serves as the attorney of record of all indigent adults in criminal cases ensuring that Benzie/Manistee County meets all constitutional and legislative requirements as they pertain to the representation of indigent adult offenders. The Public Defender is responsible for development, implementation, oversight and direction of the Public Defender Office and the indigent defense private counsel conflict/overflow list. This includes staffing, training supervising, counseling, disciplining the office, and maintaining full compliance of the State of Michigan/LARA requirements.

This is a full-time, benefited position that requires frequent travel throughout Manistee and Benzie County. The position will be open until filled and the start date of the position is contingent on the continuance of funding.

This message is to inform you that Manistee County has officially declared a Local State of Emergency due to the excessive rain runoff impacting the Bear Creek Watershed and the Big Manistee Watershed. This declaration was signed by Manistee County Board Chair Jeff Dontz in coordination with Emergency Manager Alvin Rischel. All our State Elected Officials have been notified of this situation and declaration.

Current conditions have created significant strain on local infrastructure, drainage systems, and water levels throughout the affected areas. This declaration enables us to request additional resources and support to assist the Manistee County Road Commission and/or local units in managing response and mitigation efforts.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available. Please report any local impacts, resource needs, or emerging concerns to the Manistee County Emergency Management Office or the Manistee County Road Commission as they arise.

ASSOCIATE PUBLIC DEFENDER I - Manistee County is seeking a qualified individual to fill its full-time Associate Public Defender I position at the Benzie County location.

Under the direction and supervision of the Chief Public Defender, serves as the attorney of record of all indigent defendants in criminal cases ensuring that Manistee and Benzie Counties meet all constitutional and legislative requirements as they pertain to the representation of indigent adult offenders. The Associate Public Defender will maintain full compliance with standards set forth by the MIDC/LARA.

The Associate Public Defender may participate only in assigned legal work from the Manistee/Benzie Regional Public Defender’s Office for compensation during their employment, with the exception of cases obtained prior to employment with the office. Permission by the Chief Public Defender is required to continue with prior representations.
