An Ancient Whale Kept Small Hind Limbs Long After They Stopped Being Useful for Walking

Basilosaurus was fully aquatic.

Its body was specialized for life in the sea, and its hind limbs were far too small to support it on land.

Yet those limbs had not disappeared.

Fossils preserve a pelvis, legs, ankles and feet with recognizable toes.

The limbs were functional enough to move, but not useful for ordinary locomotion.

One influential interpretation is that they helped during mating, perhaps acting as guides or grips between partners.

That explanation is plausible from their anatomy, but behavior this specific is difficult to prove in an extinct animal.

What the fossils demonstrate more securely is that evolution does not remove every structure the moment its original function disappears.

A limb inherited from walking ancestors can shrink, lose one role, and potentially acquire another.

Modern whales retain tiny internal pelvic remnants.

Basilosaurus preserves an earlier stage when external hind limbs were still present.

Do these small legs represent anatomy on its way out — or anatomy already being used for something new?

A Wild Orangutan Was Seen Applying a Medicinal Plant Directly to a Wound

In 2022, researchers in Sumatra observed a male orangutan named Rakus with an open wound on his face.

Several days later, his behavior changed around one particular plant.

He chewed leaves and stems of Fibraurea tinctoria, a plant used in traditional medicine and known to contain biologically active compounds.

Instead of simply swallowing everything, he repeatedly applied plant juice to the wound.

He then placed chewed plant material over it.

The wound later closed without signs of infection and healed over the following weeks.

One observation cannot show what the orangutan understood about the plant.

It also cannot prove that the plant caused the healing.

What makes the case unusual is the selectivity: the material was applied specifically to the injured area and the behavior was repeated.

Researchers described it as the first documented case of a wild animal actively treating an open wound with a biologically active plant.

Was this learned self-treatment, individual discovery, or behavior whose origin we cannot recover from one remarkable case?

We Can Reconstruct More of Sinosauropteryx’s Color Than Its Bones Alone Suggest

Some Sinosauropteryx fossils preserve traces of pigmentation well enough to recover parts of the animal’s original pattern.

The reconstruction is unusually specific.

A dark band crossed the face around the eyes.

The long tail carried alternating light and dark bands.

The body also appears to have been countershaded, with darker pigmentation above and a lighter underside.

Researchers went further by testing how that countershading would work under different lighting conditions.

The pattern fitted an animal living in relatively open surroundings better than one spending all its time beneath dense forest shade.

That means preserved color may tell us something not only about appearance, but about habitat.

There are limits. Fossil pigmentation does not provide a perfect color photograph, and individual variation is largely unknown.

But Sinosauropteryx has moved far beyond the old practice of choosing arbitrary dinosaur colors.

Its skin and filaments preserved part of the visual ecology of a living animal.

If color can help reconstruct habitat, how much ecological information have we been overlooking in fossils that preserve only bone?

Meerkats Change the Lesson as Their Pups Get Older

A young meerkat eventually has to learn how to deal with a scorpion.

That is not a skill with much room for careless practice.

Field research found that adult meerkats adjust the prey they give to pups according to the youngster’s age.

Very young pups may receive dead or disabled scorpions.

Older pups are increasingly given intact prey and have to finish the job themselves.

The adult is not simply dropping food.

Its behavior changes in a way that gives the learner progressively harder experience.

Researchers have used this as one of the clearest examples of teaching documented in a wild non-human animal.

There is still an important distinction from human teaching. Nobody needs to assume the adult understands what “education” is or holds a mental lesson plan.

The evidence comes from behavior and cost: adults modify what they do in response to the learner’s ability, and the pup gains a skill.

How much of teaching requires an intention to teach — and how much can be defined by what teacher and learner actually do?

One Plesiosaur Fossil Preserved a Single Large Unborn Young

For many marine reptiles, live birth solved an obvious problem.

A fully aquatic body does not make returning to land to lay eggs easy.

A remarkable Polycotylus fossil preserves an adult plesiosaur with a large embryo inside the body.

That confirmed live birth in plesiosaurs.

The embryo was also surprisingly large relative to the mother, and only one was preserved.

Researchers compared this pattern with living animals that produce small numbers of well-developed young and sometimes provide extended parental care.

That last step remains an inference.

A fossil pregnancy cannot show a mother guarding or feeding her offspring after birth.

But reproductive strategy can still provide clues about the kind of life an animal may have led.

Producing one large young is a different investment from releasing hundreds of small offspring.

The fossil therefore answered one question clearly:

plesiosaurs gave birth to live young.

It opened another that is much harder to fossilize:

what happened between parent and offspring afterward?

Mudskippers Spend Much of Their Lives on Land Without Becoming Land Animals

At low tide, mudflats can be covered with fish moving across the exposed surface.

Mudskippers feed, fight, court and defend territories outside the water.

Their gills still matter, but the fish also exchanges gases across moist surfaces in the skin and lining of the mouth and throat.

The body has to remain wet enough for those surfaces to function.

Mudskippers also store water around the gill chambers, helping keep delicate tissues from collapsing and drying.

Their fins provide support and propulsion across mud.

The eyes sit high on the head and can function above the surface.

None of these adaptations turns a mudskipper into a terrestrial vertebrate in the same sense as a lizard or mammal.

The fish remains tightly tied to wet coastal habitats.

That boundary is what makes it interesting.

Water and land are usually treated as separate environments.

Mudskippers spend each tide proving that biology can occupy the difficult space between them.

Some Male Moa May Have Been the Ones Incubating the Nest

Moa were not all built the same way.

In several species, females were much larger than males.

That already resembles a pattern seen in some living ratites.

Fossil evidence adds another similarity.

DNA recovered from moa bones found near nests and eggshells has indicated that some incubating adults were male.

Among living ostriches, emus, rheas and cassowaries, males commonly take major roles in incubation or chick care.

That does not prove every moa species followed the same system.

Nor does a bone near a nest preserve the full parenting routine.

But it offers a different view of these extinct birds.

The largest adult in the population may not have been the one sitting over the eggs.

Sexual size difference and parental roles could have been strongly divided.

A fossil nest can reveal more than reproduction.

With enough biological context, it can begin to tell us which parent was there.

Greenland Sharks May Live for Several Centuries

Greenland sharks grow slowly in cold North Atlantic and Arctic water.

How slowly became clearer when researchers dated material from the lenses of their eyes.

The central proteins in an eye lens form early in life and remain relatively unchanged.

Radiocarbon analysis allowed scientists to estimate the ages of large Greenland sharks.

The oldest individuals in one major study were estimated to be several centuries old, although the uncertainty around the oldest ages is substantial.

Even the lower ranges make Greenland sharks among the longest-lived vertebrates known.

Their biology follows a very different timetable from ours.

Growth is slow.

Sexual maturity may take well over a century.

A population built around such long lives can also recover slowly when adults are removed.

Longevity sounds like an advantage.

Ecologically, it can also create vulnerability.

Helicoprion’s Famous Tooth Spiral Belonged Inside Its Lower Jaw

For more than a century, paleontologists agreed on one thing about Helicoprion:

the spiral of teeth was real.

Where that spiral belonged was another matter.

Early reconstructions placed it on the nose, outside the mouth, on the tail, and in other positions that now look highly unlikely.

The problem was preservation.

Cartilage rarely fossilizes, so the tooth whorl was often found without a clear jaw around it.

Better-preserved specimens and CT-based anatomical studies eventually showed the spiral fitted within the lower jaw.

As new teeth developed, older teeth remained attached and moved inward along the whorl rather than simply falling out.

The result was a feeding structure with no close modern equivalent.

Helicoprion was related to sharks and chimaeras, but its mouth should not be reconstructed by simply enlarging something living today.

A strange fossil was not difficult because the teeth were unclear.

It was difficult because almost nothing familiar told researchers where to put them.
