STORM CLEANUP JUNE 15

We’re wrapping up Day 1 of storm cleanup in neighborhoods across town. So far, crews have hauled about 70 loads, and cleanup work will continue for at least the next two weeks.

Manhattan has been hit hard this spring, but we still have a lot to be grateful for.

Please continue placing storm debris at the curb for pickup. This week, crews are focusing on the hardest-hit areas, and those routes will take the time they take. For next week, the plan is to follow a schedule similar to Spring Cleanup, with crews spending one day in each area of town.

That said, we’ll keep adjusting as needed depending on conditions and how quickly crews are able to move through each area.

Thank you to everyone who has been helping neighbors, clearing debris, and pitching in however you can. You make Manhattan a pretty special place to call home.

🗓️KDOT hosting open houses for U.S. 24 corridor study in Riley, Pottawatomie counties

The Kansas Department of Transportation will host two open houses to provide information on the U.S. 24 Corridor Management Plan (CMP) in Riley and Pottawatomie counties.

Both open houses will present the same information, and KDOT project team members will be available to answer questions and gather public input. No formal presentations will be given; attendees may come and go at any time during the events.

Meeting times and locations:
• Monday, June 22, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: Wamego Senior & Community Center, 501 Ash Street in Wamego
• Tuesday, June 23, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.: CiCo Park – Pottorf Hall, 1710 Avery Avenue in Manhattan

The proposed CMP will update the 2009 Pottawatomie County study that evaluated U.S. 24 from Manhattan to Wamego; and extend the study corridor north to the U.S. 77/U.S. 24 junction in Riley County.

The plan will evaluate current and future traffic operations in Riley and Pottawatomie counties and identify potential improvements to enhance safety and efficiency along the corridor.

Information presented at the open houses will be available on the project website on Monday, June 22. The public can also complete a survey and submit comments through July 8 by visiting ksdot.gov/US24-Riley-Pott.

Persons needing special assistance or accommodation to attend the meeting or would like to request alternative formats of meeting materials, can email [email protected].

Storm cleanup continues across Manhattan.

Forestry and Public Works crews have spent the week reopening roadways and moving debris out of the way. Beginning Monday, June 15, crews will start picking up and hauling away limbs and branches from streets, parks, and neighborhoods.

Please note:

We can only accept yard waste
Do not place trash, shingles, boards, fencing, or other construction materials at the curb
Debris should be placed at the curb, similar to spring cleanup
There will not be a set pickup schedule during the first week. Crews will work through as much as possible, and some neighborhoods may take longer than others. We expect cleanup to take at least two weeks.

By the end of the first week, we plan to share a public pickup schedule based on how much work remains.

Need help with yard cleanup? The Flint Hills Volunteer Center can assist residents age 55 and older with piling debris for pickup. They cannot do heavy tree work such as climbing or cutting trees. To ask for help or volunteer, call (785) 776-7787.

Thank you for your patience as crews continue cleanup efforts.
