This little guy is a Kenwood VP 8000. This is the radio we use at the Manhattan Police Department. It costs $4,500 (I think I'm in the wrong line of work...) Thanks to a very generous grant from the Mason Moore Foundation we were able to purchase a new radio for our newest officer, so we don't have to share radios. The Mason Moore Foundation is an amazing organization and has awarded the Manhattan Police Department several other grants over the years. These grants are lifesavers for smaller departments who have very limited budgets. Without grants such as these it would add to the struggle of the increasing equipment costs and decreasing budgets. Thank you again to the Mason Moore Foundation and everything you do for our first responders in Montana!

Manhattan Police Department Responds to Swatting Incident at Manhattan High School

At approximately 12:42 p.m. today, the Manhattan Police Department received a report of a disturbance at Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Montana. Officers responded immediately. Units from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montana Highway Patrol also responded to assist. Manhattan Officers were on scene within 2 minutes of being dispatched with GCSO Deputies arriving on scene shortly after.

Based on the information received, the school was immediately placed on lockdown while law enforcement personnel thoroughly evaluated and investigated the reported threat. A thorough search of the campus was conducted, and it was determined there were no legitimate threats to the students, faculty, or community around the campus.

After a detailed investigation, the report was determined to be a “swatting” incident — a deliberately false call intended to provoke a significant law enforcement response. At no time were students, staff, or community members in danger. Once the building was fully cleared and no credible threat was identified, the lockdown was lifted and normal operations resumed.

The Manhattan Police Department, with assistance from the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), is actively investigating the origin of the call. Swatting is a serious criminal act that endangers students, staff, first responders, and the broader community.

We extend our appreciation to Manhattan High School administration, staff, students, and families for their cooperation, as well as to all responding agencies for their rapid and coordinated response.

Austin Owens
Chief of Police
Manhattan Police Department

***It appears there was a swatting incident today in Billings as well, unfortunately, this appears to be going around the state***
