Hannah Quellhorst, Ph.D. alum '22 and postdoc at the USDA Morrison Lab, has been visiting and collaborating with the Athanasiou lab in Volos, Greece yearly, starting in 2022.

"I call it my annual work retreat, a retreat where I GET TO WORK! All other distractions disappear, and for an average of 3-4 weeks, we do pure research." Dr. Quellhorst usually ends up completing 4-5 projects per visit yielding 4-5 manuscripts.

"My visit this May was no different! Our collaborators in Greece have become my family, and they made my lifelong dream of visiting my great grandfather’s village in Gavrolimni, Greece, a reality."

She is looking forward to their future collaboration and hopes to visit again in 2027. Her research focuses on improving management of maize in developing countries. Her interests include global food security, international development, women empowerment, insect biochemistry and physiology, and insect behavior.

In the future, she hopes to focus on humanitarian science through a career in Entomology. Ultimately, she hopes to apply her skills to fight world hunger.

This project is one of the examples of how the Insect Farming Initiative supports student applied learning and research advancement.

Recently graduating from our doctoral program, Nicole Kucherov is now post doctoral researcher in the ! She has been working on an exciting new project investigating the chemical ecology of stored product landscapes with the support of K-State vet student Avery James.

Through lots of trouble-shooting, they have developed these mesocosms to determine how sanitation after harvest affects the odors produced by insects and how we can use that for behaviorally-based management. Awesome work by both!

Big ideas start with strong partnerships.

Team Aqualoop earned second place and $100,000 in seed funding for their innovative approach to improving water efficiency and reuse in agricultural and food production systems.

The project brings together expertise in chemistry, entomology, grain and food science, finance and public relations, the team is exploring ways to transform agricultural waste into valuable products that can help purify water and reduce environmental impacts.

A key component of the project is insect farming, which will support the development of new products ranging from feed to fertilizers. This project exemplifies how the Insect Farming Initiative is already advancing research and innovation in this growing field.

For Research Professor and Initiative Director Christos Athanassiou, the project demonstrates the power of connecting science with communication and public engagement.

"Scientists can communicate our results, but what this group can do is create public awareness," Athanassiou said.

Congratulations to the entire Aqualoop team on this exciting recognition and investment in the future of sustainable agriculture and water stewardship.
