Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is an invasive, aphid-like insect that feeds on North American hemlock trees. They are small, but can be identified by their wooly, cotton-like masses at the base of hemlock needles. Hemlocks are ecologically important since they create cool, dark sheltered environments for wildlife. For more info and actions you can take for HWA infested trees visit https://dec.ny.gov/nature/animals-fish-plants/insects-and-other-species/hemlock-woolly-adelgid.

Chinese and Japanese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis/floribunda) are commonly used horticultural plants, but they are invasive vines that can take over a landscape. They can strangle and girdle trees, which weaken or kill them as well as make them more susceptible to storm damage. If you have these plants on your property removing them is best. If you like the look of wisteria, there is a native species, American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) you can plant instead. For more info on identification and removal visit https://liisma.org/wisteria/

North Hempstead’s next Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) event takes place on Sunday, June 28 at Westbury High School, 1 Post Road, Old Westbury. Residents can drop off chemical and e-waste items like aerosols, household chemicals, pesticides, disinfectants, fertilizers, bulbs, thermostats, rechargeable and lithium batteries, TVs, and computers. Latex and water-based paints can be placed in a trash bag and thrown out with your regular household garbage once they’ve dried out (usually 24-36 hours after the lid is removed), and they are not accepted at S.T.O.P. collection events. However, oil-based paints are considered hazardous and will be accepted at collection events.

Residents are also invited to bring their sensitive documents to S.T.O.P. events for proper shredding and destruction to prevent identity theft. These documents will be shredded on-site by a document shredding company and then transported to a pulping mill for recycling. There is a limit of 6 “bankers’ box” sized boxes per day.

Did you know commonly used landscape plants Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii) (pictured), butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) and burning bush (Euonymous alatus) are all invasive species? These plants often escape cultivation with windblown or bird eaten seeds and berries and can get into natural areas and outcompete native species that wildlife needs to survive. Some great native alternative shrubs are sweet pepperbush (Clethra alnifolia), ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius), and highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum). For more info visit northhempsteadny.gov/invasive.
