As we remember September 11th, I think it’s also important to remember the sense of unity, kindness, and community that followed.

That spirit is something we should never lose.

News 12 stopped by last week at the Nassau County Department of Assessment’s H.E.L.P. program at the Port Washington Public Library. The Tax Office was also there to answer residents’ questions and provide assistance.

A reminder that the H.E.L.P. program, which provides one-on-one assistance to homeowners, will continue through November. Visit the Department of Assessment website at askthecountyassessor.com and click on Outreach Calendar to view additional dates and locations.

Our Tax Exemption Seminars begin Tuesday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Manhasset Public Library and continue through November. We offer both daytime and evening seminars at locations throughout the Town of North Hempstead. These seminars provide a summary of available exemptions, as well as when and how to apply.

Our rescheduled Funday Monday: Salute to the Troops was a wonderful celebration! The rain held off, and our seniors and veterans came out in great numbers. It felt like a good old-fashioned block party—with music, dancing, hot dogs and ice cream.

Our veterans were honored with remarks from Supervisor Jen DeSena and members of the Town Board, as well as County Comptroller Elaine Phillips, Assemblyman Ed Ra, and Legislator Viviana Russell.

Many thanks to Kim Corcoran -Gallante, Kelly Gillen, and their staffs, along with the many high school volunteers, for all their hard work making our Funday Monday events such a success.

And thank you to my staff members Orfie Miranda, Lynda Del Balzo, and Dolores Conelley for being there each week to answer questions and help our residents. It was a great summer of Funday Mondays!

Supervisor Jen DeSena stopped by the H.E.L.P. Seminar at the Manhasset library and spoke with residents.
Mineola Senior Marie came to submit her Senior Exemption application.
Marie was the catalyst for my efforts to have the Mineola School Board raise the income threshold to 58,399. She said this will save her a significant amount on her property tax bill.
Please consider taking advantage of either session on 8/19 at Clinton G Martin Park, and 9/3 at Port Washington- all 12-2pm.

I had the pleasure of attending the Kiwanis Club of Manhasset-Port Washington’s celebration of Carl Lalena’s 100th birthday and a farewell to longtime member and leader Dr. Kathy Levinson.

These two individuals, through their many years of service and willingness to give their time, have truly helped make our community a better place. I was happy to have the opportunity to thank them in person, along with Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte and Supervisor Jen DeSena.

I also shared a story about Carl. He still comes into our Tax Office in person—and he always makes sure to pay his taxes on time! Carl is 100 years old and I must admit, it makes some of the excuses I hear from others a little harder to accept! 😊

Happy 100th birthday, Carl, and congratulations to Kathy on her many years of service to the Kiwanis Club and our community!

Come on down to Funday Monday! 🌺

Just two dates remain—today’s Hawaiian-themed Funday Monday and next week’s Salute to the Troops.

Get there early and enjoy pickleball, Tai Chi, or line dancing. Supervisor DeSena and I had a lot of fun learning a country line dance and, of course, greeting residents along the way!

Funday Monday at the Town of North Hempstead Beach is a great way to start the week. Hope to see you there! 🌴

National Night Out is one of my favorite events of the summer, bringing neighbors, local police, first responders, and community organizations together for an evening of fun while strengthening the partnerships that help keep our neighborhoods safe.

I had a wonderful time visiting three celebrations on Tuesday evening—Lions Field in Port Washington, Whitney Park in Great Neck, and Bunky Reid Park in Westbury. It was great catching up with so many residents and seeing kids of all ages enjoying the festivities. The beach ball giveaway in Westbury was definitely a crowd favorite!

Thank you to the Nassau County Police Department, first responders, volunteers, and everyone who helped make these events such a success. It was a wonderful evening celebrating the strong sense of community that makes the Town of North Hempstead so special.

Congratulations to Susan Berman and the team at the Sid Jacobson JCC for securing a grant and organizing an incredible community event, The Longest Table.

Built around the theme “NeighborGood: Find the Good in Community,” the event was designed to bring people together, fostering conversation, connection, and new friendships.

Although the threat of rain moved the event indoors to the Polish American Hall in Port Washington, the spirit of community was stronger than ever.

I was delighted to catch up with my fellow Village of Flower Hill Trustee, Claire Dorfman, who hosted a table with her neighbors.

When neighbors come together, great things happen. Thank you to everyone who made this inspiring event possible.
