Asking Manhasset High to honor Mr. John Shorter (former teacher) by naming the refurbished auditorium after him... be great if more people sent emails to the board asking for the same.

Dear Mr. Ted Post, Ms. Nadia Giannopoulos, Ms. Marianna Bruno, Ms. Maria Pescatore, and Ms. Allison O’Brien Silva,
I am writing to respectfully request that the refurbished auditorium at Manhasset High School be named in honor of Mr. John Shorter, whose 30 years of service as Theater Director and an English teacher at Manhasset High, profoundly enriched the cultural and academic life of our school community, including my own (I was in the production of The Sound of Music in 9th grade and Mr. Shorter was my English teacher my Junior Year at MHS).
Mr. Shorter’s passion for the arts and his unwavering dedication to his students left an indelible mark on generations of Manhasset graduates. Through his leadership in the theater program, he not only brought countless productions to life but also cultivated a sense of confidence, collaboration, and creativity in his students, values that have endured long after they left his classroom and the stage.
As an educator, Mr. Shorter inspired excellence, curiosity, and empathy. His influence extended far beyond the walls of the auditorium; he encouraged students to find their voice, think critically, and engage deeply with literature and art. For many, his mentorship was a defining part of their Manhasset experience.
Naming the new auditorium in his honor would be a fitting tribute to a man whose life’s work elevated both the academic and artistic spirit of Manhasset High School. It would serve as a lasting reminder of the transformative power of education and the arts, principles that Mr. Shorter championed throughout his career.
Thank you for considering this request to honor a teacher whose legacy continues to resonate within our community. I, along with many alumni and residents, believe that dedicating the auditorium to Mr. Shorter would be a meaningful way to celebrate the history and heart of Manhasset High School.
With gratitude and respect,
Kathleen Rocklein Sontag (MHS Grad 1985)
