This morning at 0052, Manchester FD was dispatched to a smoke investigation call on East Main St., in the area of Taylor Foster Hardware. Units arrived minutes later to find heavy smoke conditions making locating the source of the fire difficult. A well involved structure fire was located at 105 East Main St. Automatic aid response from Meriwether County Fire Rescue and Flint Hill VFD was requested.

Crews deployed 2 attack lines and a 2 1/2” exposure line using the BlitzFire nozzle to extinguish the fire and protect the exposure on the Delta side of the structure. The primary involved structure was built with concrete blocks, became fully involved and resulted in a total roof collapse.

The exposure structure became involved. Crews forced entry and made a rapid primary search and determined no one was home.

The fire was brought under control and units returned to service at 0450.

Thank you to Manchester PD, Georgia Power and the American Red Cross for their assistance.

The State Fire Marshal’s office was requested to investigate the cause of the fire.

Not just the fire service but all facets of life

“A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.”

Proverbs 6:10-11

What seems harmless, a few missed obligations, a habit of procrastination, a pattern of choosing comfort over discipline, gradually erodes the ground beneath your feet.

The arrival of consequences feels sudden, but the seeds were planted long before.

Scripture isn’t condemning rest.

God designed the Sabbath, Jesus withdrew to pray, and healthy sleep is part of stewardship.

The warning here is about complacency, the unwillingness to take responsibility, to keep showing up, to cultivate discipline. “A little folding of the hands” is a poetic way of saying, “I’ll get to it later.”

Over time, later becomes never, and never becomes the acceptance of mediocrity.

Poverty can mean more than financial lack. It can be relational poverty, spiritual barrenness, or missed opportunities that rob you of growth and impact.

These losses often strike like an ambush: the marriage suddenly feels distant; you perform poorly on a call; the health suddenly collapses.

But in reality, those outcomes were slowly built up through the daily drift of compromised decisions.

The opposite of this proverb is steady, humble diligence.

Showing up when you don’t feel like it.

Planting seeds before you see the harvest.

Guarding your time, your habits, and your heart so that “a little” drift doesn’t become a life of drift.

True discipline is freedom: it frees you from the panic of being unprepared and the regret of wasted potential.

Diligence today builds security tomorrow.

Lord,

Thank you for your wisdom, which warns me about the danger of small compromises. Teach me to value diligence, to be faithful in the little things, and to resist the temptation to drift into complacency.

Guard my heart from laziness and my mind from excuses. Let my work and my rest both honor You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
