As we approach the 25th Anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, there will be many news specials, documentaries, photographs, and videos shared on television and across social media.

It is hard to comprehend that it has been 25 years...

A beautiful, sunny Tuesday morning would soon become one of the darkest days in our nation's history — forever changing New York City, Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the Pentagon, our country, and our world.

This video, however, tells another part of the story of September 11th and the days, weeks, and months that followed.

It tells the story of the New York City Fire Department Emerald Society Pipes and Drums and the incredible responsibility they carried as they played at funeral... after funeral... after funeral... for their fallen brothers.

343 FDNY firefighters lost on September 11th.

For those in the fire service, there is something about the sound of bagpipes at a firefighter's funeral that is difficult to put into words. They can represent tradition, brotherhood, honor, mourning, and a final farewell.

Imagine having to play them over and over again.

To stand at attention.

To look upon another grieving family.

To honor another fallen brother.

And then prepare to do it all over again.

Those pipes became part of the soundtrack of America's grief.

As we mark 25 years, we remember not only what happened on September 11, 2001, but also everything that followed — the funerals, the empty seats at kitchen tables, the empty bunks in firehouses, the families left behind, and the brothers and sisters who somehow continued answering the next alarm while grieving unimaginable loss.

There are now firefighters entering the fire service who were not even alive on September 11, 2001.

That makes our responsibility to remember even greater.

Tell the stories.

Remember the names.

Honor the sacrifice.

Teach the next generation why we say:

NEVER FORGET.

We should never forget.
We shall always remember.
And we will always honor those who answered their final alarm.

The members of Union Fire Company will be hosting an informal remembrance service to honor our fallen Brothers of emergency services, and fellow citizens of 9/11, 25 years ago. The service on 9/11/26 begins at 0830 hrs at the flagpole in front of our station, and will conclude at 0900 hrs. We welcome our neighboring emergency services (Fire, Police and EMS) and the public who wish to attend. The services will move indoors if there is inclement weather.

🔥 BRUSH FIRE – STATION 23

At approximately 11:08 AM on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Union Fire Company No. 1 – Station 23 was dispatched to the rear of the 255-block of Glen Drive, behind Buffalo Wild Wings, for a reported brush fire involving trees and hedges.

Deputy 23 and Fire Police Captain 23 arrived on scene and confirmed an active fire involving brush and pine trees.

🚒 Engine 23-2 arrived and deployed a front attack line, beginning extinguishment operations. Engine 23-1 arrived shortly afterward and assisted with gaining access to remaining hot spots using a chainsaw and hand tools.

Thankfully, no buildings or neighboring residences were damaged.

Station 23 cleared the scene at approximately 11:47 AM.

Great work by all members who responded and worked together to quickly contain and extinguish the fire!

8/19/2026 Company Drill Night. Following a delicious dinner, members of Company 23 & 22 reviewed roof operations, ventilation practices and garage door access. Our roof and door simulator is ideal for practicing critical skills and allowing new members hands-on experience in a controlled environment. Members also had the opportunity to compare both electric (battery) powered saws as well as gas powered.
