On August 9, 2026, shortly after 2:00 p.m., the Manchester Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a hiker had fallen at Lye Brook Falls and was injured.

Manchester Police Department, Manchester Fire Department VT, and Northshire Rescue Squad were dispatched to the scene. Responding agencies established a staging area off the Lye Brook Trailhead. Lye Brook Falls is located approximately 2.3 miles from the trailhead, with approximately 900 feet of elevation change, requiring responders to travel a significant distance into the area. The injured hiker was located within the falls, in difficult and challenging terrain.

Due to the location and complexity of the rescue, additional assistance was requested from Dorset Fire Department, East Dorset Fire Department, Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department, West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., Rupert VT Volunteer Fire Department, and Arlington VT Fire Department.

Because of the technical nature of the rescue and the difficult terrain, a technical rescue team from City of Rutland Fire Department was also requested to assist with the operation.

LifeNet of New York was requested to respond to the Manchester Public Safety Facility, where the helicopter landed. The medical crew was transported to the scene to assist with the rescue and provide medical care.

The U.S. Forest Service and Vermont Fish & Wildlife Wardens also assisted with the rescue operation.

The Manchester Communications Center coordinated the multi-agency response, bringing together fire, EMS, law enforcement, and state and federal resources to safely reach and assist the injured hiker in the challenging terrain.

🚧 PUBLIC NOTICE – TEMPORARY WATER SHUTOFF 🚧

The Manchester Police Department would like to notify residents that there will be a temporary water shutdown for scheduled maintenance on Monday, August 3rd, 2026 from 8:00AM to 1:00PM.

Affected Area:
📍 Properties located on Main Street, between Barnumville Road and Hunter Park Road.

Residents and businesses in the affected area should plan accordingly, as water service will be unavailable during the maintenance period. Once work is complete, water service will be restored as quickly as possible.

After service is restored, you may notice temporary discoloration or air in your water lines. If this occurs, simply run your cold water for several minutes until it clears.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as this necessary maintenance is completed.

Today we celebrate the retirement of Chief Patrick “PJ” Owens. Chief Owens has served the town of Manchester faithfully for the last 34 years, rising through the ranks from Patrolman, Detective, Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and finally the Chief for the last 7 years.

During his time as Chief, PJ led the department through the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting transition to Officers being on duty 24/7, the start of the departments first K9 program, and renovation of the departments Dispatch Center and radio technology.

Chiefs Owens career will be celebrated with a brief procession down Main Street from the Village to the Police Department around 2pm today.

Thank you Chief Owens for your dedication, leadership and mentorship over your career. All of us at the Manchester Police department wish you a fulfilling, healthy and happy retirement.

VT Route 11/30 is closed between New Ireland Rd and the VT 30 South (top of the Mountain due to a motor vehicle accident . Expect the closure to last a couple hours. Please seek an alternate route of travel.
