Reminder with monsoon season on the horizon: Flash floods are no joke!!! Do NOT hike, camp, park, or do anything in a dry wash/creek bottom/etc! You never know what’s upstream! It can be blue skies in your location but raining hard a couple miles upstream!

Stage two. We did this as soon as we could on the first property. The second barely got started when it just got too dry to continue. Next winter we’ll try again.

Did you know there’s over 1,000 species of bees in Arizona alone, not counting honey bees? As you can imagine, all of them are facing a hard time with the current drought.

Earlier in the season, we planted a sunflower patch at the Ed center, in part to attract and benefit pollinators. I’d say it’s been a real success. The abundance of life that it’s attracted is amazing. In this video, you can see a bumblebee foraging for nectar. I can count on one hand the number of bumblebees I’d ever seen in the low desert. However, in this flower patch, there’s dozens of them at the moment, along with many other pollinator species. Weeds haven’t even been an issue, as the bees love them too. Consider planting a pollinator patch in your yard - it’s an excellent, low-input way to benefit local life.

“Plant it and they will come.”
