This Healthy and Safe Swimming Week, keep water safety top of mind. Prevent drowning by always keeping new or inexperienced swimmers and young children within arm’s reach when swimming or around water.

Poisonous Death Cap (Amanita phalloides) and Western Destroying Angel (Amanita ocreata) mushrooms are continuing to grow in California, including in areas where they are normally not found.

These poisonous wild mushrooms can look and taste like safe-to-eat mushrooms. Just one bite can lead to hospitalization, a liver transplant and even death.

Mushroom hunters and foragers face serious risk. California is experiencing a record-breaking outbreak of severe illness and deaths linked to people accidentally eating these poisonous wild mushrooms.

If you or someone you know may have eaten a poisonous wild mushroom:
- Immediately seek medical care.
- Call the Poison Control hotline: 1-800-222-1222.

Sun safety during the summer is a must. People of all skin tones can reduce their risk of sun damage and skin cancer by:
🏖🌴 Staying in the shade.

👒😎 Wearing wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses and clothing that covers the body.
🧴Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 for sun protection. If using both sunscreen and insect repellent, apply sunscreen first.

More food options are here at WIC! Pick and choose more foods your family enjoys.

- Swap some of your WIC milk for other healthy options like tofu or yogurt.

- Need a different protein? You can swap your eggs for items like peanut butter, canned or dry beans or tofu.

At your next appointment, ask your WIC counselor about the foods you can swap.

See all your new options at MyFamily.WIC.ca.gov.
