Malibu Volunteers on Patrol

Malibu Volunteers on Patrol VOPs augment the LASD. They patrol in marked LASD vehicles checking for suspicious circumstances, crimes, road hazards, and other issues.

They conduct traffic control during natural disasters and accidents and otherwise augment the LASD as needed. LASD's Volunteers on Patrol (“VOP’s”) act as “eye and ears” to identify suspicious activities and hazardous conditions. Malibu VOP's perform certain additional patrol duties such as traffic control and parking enforcement. The LASD VOP team is actively recruiting new members. Interested parties can contact us by email at [email protected] or by direct message on this platform.

TRAPPED BY THE TIDE AT POINT DUME

Yesterday evening, a Malibu/Lost Hills Volunteers on Patrol unit was flagged down near the Cliffside Trailhead by a concerned father reporting that his teenage son and the son’s girlfriend had become trapped between Big Dume and Little Dume by rapidly rising tides.

The VOP responded to the area with the father, searching from multiple access points while requesting assistance from deputies and Los Angeles County Lifeguards. The couple was in a difficult area to access, but fortunately they were ultimately able to scramble across rocks and safely make it back to shore before conditions worsened.

This incident is a reminder that Point Dume’s ocean conditions can change fast — especially near sunset and high tide.

Great teamwork between family members, Malibu VOPs, deputies, and lifeguards helped bring this incident to a safe conclusion.

Yesterday, deputies received a radio call regarding a grand theft at the CVS near PCH and Webb Way in Malibu. A Malibu VOP unit from Lost Hills Sheriff's Station was on patrol in the area and observed a person matching the broadcast description. The VOP maintained a “long eye” on the subject while providing deputies with updated locations and a more detailed description, helping deputies quickly locate and detain the suspect nearby. While deputies conducted their investigation, the VOP repositioned his vehicle to close lanes and assist with traffic control in the area.

Deputies recovered numerous items of alleged stolen property and later determined the suspect also had an outstanding warrant before transporting the individual to Lost Hills Station for booking.

This incident is another great example of how trained volunteers can provide meaningful support and added value to law enforcement operations in the field.
