Trails connect us to nature and to each other.

In 2024, we launched Trails for All, an initiative focused on enhancing access to nature for people with disabling conditions and promoting inclusivity across Massachusetts’ woodland trails.

After a year of site visits, public forums, and community input, the Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation released the Trails for All Report— a sweeping set of recommendations to expand accessible trails across Massachusetts. Led by a 24-member Working Group, including advocates, planners, land managers, and people with lived experience of disability.

Archery, open water swimming, AND gravel biking? Challenge accepted!

Last week, Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation Director Paul Jahnige and Department of Fish and Game Commissioner Tom O’Shea, along with state officials and community members, convened in Charlemont, to dream big about the future of Massachusetts’s outdoor recreation industry.

Did you know that in 2024, Massachusetts’ outdoor recreation economy created 108,000 jobs? Our states natural resources offer ample opportunities for employment and exploration- with over 8,229 miles of rivers and nearly 450,000 acres of State forests, parks and reservations.

What’s scenic and peaceful and worth exploring all over? The 413… obviously 🌄

Yesterday, we gathered at in Charlemont for a listening session that brought together leaders, community members, and the Lieutenant Governor to hear directly from the people who make the Massachusetts outdoor recreation industry what it is.

We also got to take a dip in the Deerfield River with Brian Gilbert wrapping up a picture perfect in Western Mass.

Jumping in puddles, climbing trees, and catching bugs, are one of the many hallmarks of a childhood enjoyed outdoors. 🐞🌷🌳🤸

The Massachusetts Office of Outdoor Recreation (MOOR) and the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) are excited to introduce “Outdoor Start,” a resource hub designed to help families and early education programs spend more time in nature.
Research shows that outdoor time benefits young children by promoting physical and mental health, social skills, personal growth, and environmental awareness.

The resource hub offers information for policymakers, families, and early education providers on the benefits of nature for young children and ways to engage with the outdoors in positive and developmentally appropriate ways.

Time recreating in nature is essential for our health, and Massachusetts is striving to be a national example of how cities and states can collaborate with healthcare providers to improve the well-being of their residents.

In January, MOOR, and The City of Malden, in partnership with First Seed Sown, announced the “Outdoor Rx” pilot program, launching in Spring 2026.
This four-week program aims to improve mental well-being for people with disabilities at no cost.

Participants can choose from four activities: outdoor art, forest bathing, birding, and adaptive hiking, all held in and around Malden, with all equipment and instruction provided, without any insurance paperwork or fees.

There’s still time to shoot your shot- and go snowshoeing. 😉

Snowshoeing is a great way to explore snowy landscapes and experience some low impact “slow adrenaline”. Movement during the winter can help combat seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and offer a new way of appreciating the beauty of the outdoors during all its seasons.

Here are some spots to start your snowshoeing adventure in Massachusetts:
*Note not all properties have snowshoe rentals available
-The Trustees Notchview, Windsor (Snowshoe rentals available)
-The Trustees Copicut Woods, Fall River
-Mass Audubon Boston Nature Center, Mattapan (Snowshoe rentals available)
-Wachusett Meadow, Princeton (Snowshoe rentals available)
-Weston Ski Track, Weston (Snowshoe rentals available)
