Oneida County Weed Department

Oneida County Weed Department Our job is to monitor and control the spread of noxious w**ds through our county. It is our job to monitor and control these w**ds specifically.

The Oneida County W**d Department is charged with the responsibility by the federal government and the state of Idaho to control the spread of noxious w**ds that have been listed by the state of Idaho (listed here: http://www.idahoag.us/Categories/PlantsInsects/NoxiousW**ds/watchlist.php). Noxious w**ds are defined as, "plants that grow out of place and is competitive, persistent, and pernicious."

We are also able to help identify and possibly give recommendations about common household w**ds but we are not able to spray them or take care of them for you. But feel free to ask us or post pictures of mysterious w**ds around the county, for all we know it could be on the noxious w**ds list! Our hopes for this page are to increase the communication with the community and educate the public about these awful pests!

I know it has been awhile since a post was made. I am trying to separate Oneida County W**d Department page from my personal page, so far no luck! However, things have been severely busy this year. We have had success on several fronts, but as always your help is needed to be a complete success. Remember, you can contact me Monday through Thursday from 6a.m. And 4p.m. Thank you for the support.

2 weeks ago I informed that County Commissioners that I, Nathan Whipple, was leaving my position as the Oneida County W**d Superintendent and taking a position at Stotz Equipment in Tremonton. I want to again thank the commissioners for all of their support of the last year that I have been here. They have fully backed me and my crazy ideas and it was greatly appreciated. I am very proud of the things that I was able to accomplish as the w**d sup. and I feel like I grew as a boss and as an individual. Every boss and superintendent should try to leave their department in a better position that they took it over in, and I feel like I have done that. Thank you to everyone who had patience and worked with me and I ask that you keep working with the department in the future. The commissioners have interviewed and hired Mike LaRue to replace me. Mike was employed by the department last season and did a fantastic job. He's patient and has a great work ethic. I will stress to him to keep this page updated and current when I transfer it over to him. Take care everyone and I will see you all around town!

This is our first post in a very long time since I have been over with the Road & Bridge for the winter. But spring is finally here and plants are starting to grow! So this is a reminder to keep your eyes out for any strange plants that you might not recognize, they just might be like this plant, Poison Hemlock. This plant is very toxic if ingested, hence the name, and it really likes to get an early jump on the growing season. This picture was taken this morning. Luckily it is very easy to kill using herbicides. If you think you have some of this then give me a call or hit me up on here and I can come take a look for you!

This is the only condition that Yellow Starthistle should be in. We had a great effect on it with our spray last week!

Here is our plant of the week! Dyer's Woad is what we have been focusing on for the last couple weeks. It is really prevalent in the areas around us and we are trying to keep it at bay. If anyone sees some of this let me know.

I was recently contacted about a plant that produces a milky substance that causes a nasty skin reaction. With pictures and some research we determined that it was Myrtle Spurge, aka Blue Spurge or Donkey Tail. This plant can be found in shaded areas around scrubs and landscaped areas. Some people like it for it's bright yellow flower and it's drought tolerance but I highly recommend removing this from your yard! It can be toxic if ingested and can cause severe skin irritation. Here is a link to a useful article produced by the state of Utah.
