Malad Valley Welsh Festival

Malad Valley Welsh Festival This is the home of the Malad Valley Welsh Festival The residents of Malad Valley would like to invite everyone to the Malad Valley Welsh Festival this year.

We are celebrating the rich Welsh heritage that has contributed to the quality of life in the settlement of this beautiful valley. Welsh pioneers were the first to settle in the Malad Valley in the 1860s. One of their many Welsh traditions was an annual cultural arts event called an eisteddfod, with roots going back 900 years. This event was held locally for many years until it was discontinued be

fore World War 1. Today, Malad Valley has the largest per capita concentration of people of Welsh ancestry outside the country of Wales itself. For that reason, many residents of the Valley wanted to reestablish their Welsh roots. In 2005, after a 90 year break, this annual cultural event, now called the Malad Valley Welsh Festival, once again became a reality.

BIG CHANGES COMING TO MALAD VALLEY WELSH FESTIVAL!
Date: September 19, 2026
Location: Heritage Square in Samaria (8 miles southwest of Malad)
Chair: Luke Waldron
Events: Keep checking as many events will be discontinued and other events will be initiated!

With the goal of “celebrating and preserving the Welsh heritage of Malad Valley,” the Festival began in 2005 with no budget, a dozen activities, and lots of volunteers.

Luke Waldron has been part of the Festival from its beginning, mostly by offering activities at the Heritage Square in Samaria. His enthusiasm for Wales and Welsh pioneer heritage is well known throughout Malad Valley. Therefore, he was the natural choice to become the next chair of the Festival, replacing Jean Thomas, who has served as co-chair for 2 years and chair for 18 years. The Heritage Square Committee, chaired by Luke, will take over all planning and organizing of the Festival once the transition is complete.

The last weekend in June has been the date for the Festival since 2007, but there have been conflicts every year with church camps, scout camps, sports camps and games, and vacations. Therefore, other dates were considered. Owain Glyndr is a celebrated hero in Wales throughout the month of September. The committees determined that the third Saturday in September would become the new date for the Festival, recognizing that some flexibility will be needed because of potential conflicts with school activities.

The Welsh history, culture, and traditions that the Welsh pioneers brought with them to the Malad Valley will continue, just with some changes that will strengthen that focus. The Festival will continue to invite everyone – whether or not you are Welsh – to the Malad Valley Welsh Festival at Heritage Square.

“Hail the Day That Sees Him Rise” joyfully evokes the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and is often sung during the Easter season. But it was actually written to commemorate another sacred event: the Ascension, when the resurrected Savior ascended to heaven after spending 40 days preparing His disciples to take His gospel to the world.

The author of this 18th-century text, Charles Wesley, is considered to be one of the greatest English hymn writers of all time. This version of the hymn pairs Wesley’s text with music composed in 1817 by Robert Williams, who named the tune Llanfair. Williams was a basket maker from the Isle of Anglesey in Wales. Blind from birth, Williams was a talented musician who could write down a tune perfectly after hearing it only once.

The largest collection of music provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for worship including hymns, songs, music for youth, choir, instrumentalists, and more.

On 20 January 1785, Samuel Ellis, a merchant born in Wrexham, Wales, bought a small island in New York Harbor then known as Oyster Island. The island later took his name, becoming Ellis Island.

After Ellis died in 1794, his family eventually sold the land, and it passed into government ownership. More than a century later, the island would play a pivotal role in American history.

Between 1892 and 1954, Ellis Island became the United States’ busiest immigration station, serving as the gateway for over 12 million immigrants seeking a new life in America.
