What is a Mayor?

Servant of the People: I believe a mayor is primarily a leader in the service of the people, a leader who is not motivated by personal gain or self-promotion. As Superintendent of Mahwah Public Works, I have the background, skills, and in-depth knowledge of how to help make Mahwah work more efficiently on every level. As mayor, I will use this experience to help enhance the service needs of our community. For the past 30 years, I have served the people as a volunteer firefighter and former Fire Chief for Mahwah. I fully understand both the human and business side of running our town and have the leadership skills to manage the balance between the two.

Manager for the People: I believe a mayor must be a strong manager - someone who understands municipal budgets, personnel resources and all of the associated statutory requirements at the Federal, State, and County level. As a Public Works manager, I have successfully prepared and controlled annual budgets, developed capital plans, hired and managed all personnel, and directed operations. As your mayor, I will collaborate with our Town Council to help ensure that we spend and invest wisely, guided by intelligent planning, thoughtful analysis, and fairness. Personal agendas have no place in that process.

Leadership with Integrity: I believe a mayor must have a set of morals and standards that directs his every action - a moral compass that is not guided by self-importance or gain, big business, special interests, or outsiders. As mayor, the only gain important to me would be the quality of life for all our residents. A mayor's legacy, like that of our late Mayor Martel, should rest on the successes achieved with the people and for the people. He and I shared the same moral compass. I believed in him. Now I hope you will believe in me.

Good day to you. I'm asking you to remember that Tuesday, November 6th is Election Day. I also ask that you consider casting your vote for Mayor for Ed Sinclair.

For the past 19 years, Ed has worked for Mahwah's Department of Public Works, 4 years as Superintendent. Not only does Ed insure that our township facilities and operations are run efficiently, (which include items as street cleaning, snow plowing, recycling collection, maintenance to buildings, grounds, parks and ballfields) he has vast experience working with budgets and budgetary restraints. His knowledge of the Township's infrastructure is second to none!

Ed has served the Township for the past 31 years as a volunteer, including being a member of Company #2 Fire; Department Fire Chief, commanding five (5) fire companies; and as a former member of Company #1 Ambulance, as an EMT and Driver. His regard and respect for the volunteer services and the volunteers of this town are without question. Naturally, this is a subject near and dear to my heart.

Unlike his opponent, I am confident that Mr. Sinclair will lead with professionalism, not intimidation. As the Captain of Co #1 Ambulance and a resident of Mahwah, I can tell you that this is something that is truly needed.

I urge my friends, neighbors and all registered voters living in Mahwah to cast their vote for Mayor, on Tuesday, for Ed Sinclair.

Some residents should be reminded that due to Hurricane Sandy the voting district locations for District 4, Ramapo Ridge Clubhouse, on Lydia Lane, as well as Districts 5 and 14 at the Bergen County Police and Fire Academy on Campgaw Road have been changed. If you normally vote in Districts 4, 5, or 14, your voting location for Election Day on the 6th has been moved to the Senior Citizen Center in the Municipal Building at 475 Corporate Drive. This change is only for those people that normally vote at the Ramapo Ridge Clubhouse on Lydia Lane or at the Bergen County Police and Fire Academy on Campgaw Road, all other voting locations will remain the same.

If you are not registered to vote in Mahwah, please disregard this post. You may feel free to share this to any of your friends, neighbors, acquaintances that live in Mahwah.

I hope my other notes helped you understand the reality of what is going on in our town. What I'd really like you to know is how I would govern as your Mayor. I am guided by principles of honesty, integrity, and loyalty. I will treat everyone fairly and firmly. As your public servant, I believe I have a duty to spend your money wisely. I have a duty to treat all departments equally. I have a duty to look for and rid wasteful spending, leverage efficiencies, and manage our finances prudently. To do this, I will look to all options, including privatization. However, before I recommend this option, I will make sure that all data and all studies that we are utilizing are accurate, relevant, and up to date. I will assess the entirety of the impact of the proposed changes and the long-term effects of the proposed changes.

Our current Mayor did not do this. In fact, when theTown Council voted his proposal down, he condemned them publicly in the Mahwah Suburban News (August 16, 2012). I will work with our elected officials to resolve our financial challenges in a cooperative manner to meet and exceed our State mandates. I will serve you prudently. If you want a leader with integrity, vote for Ed Sinclair.

Dear Mahwah Residents and Voters,

Last week our mailboxes were full of campaign literature from our current mayor in which he takes personal credit for the hard work and dedication of our Township employees, volunteers, and Council.

The fact is that Laforet manages by intimidation, not by consensus. He tried to privatize our recycling services with a flawed plan that would have cost our town more money. When the Council stood up to him and wisely voted his idea down, he took out a full page ad in our local paper personally condemning them for their vote. He blasted them for saving you money!

Mahwah deserves better.

As your mayor, I'll focus on one thing: putting taxpayers first. I have dedicated my life to working for the residents of Mahwah. I'll build upon my successful record and support our volunteer organizations to save your tax dollars. I'll use my professional management skills to hold property taxes stable and provide strong fiscal oversight of our Township budget.
Make the right choice. Vote for Ed Sinclair for Mayor (column 2) on Tuesday, November 6.

INTERNAL MEMO TO OUR FACEBOOK FANS
(1) Thank you so much for all of your support.
(2) We are very proud of our "real" facebook fan base.
(3) For anyone who has been watching closely over the last several weeks, it isn't hard to figure out that our opponent's fan base is artificial.
(4) There are two ways to tell this: (1) they have had highly irregular spikes in fans (e.g. 900 overnight); (2) they have no real fan support when they post a new messages (e.g. only about 0-15 "likes" per post compared to our 40-60 "likes" per post).
(6) Pay no attention to the anonymous total likes, but pay very close attention to the "real" likes on each facebook post.
(7) Thanks again for all of your continued "REAL" support! We have lots to talk about in this upcoming week. We think that you will "Like" it.

THE LETTER THAT THE "PATCH" WOULDN'T PRINT

Dear Jessica,

I am writing to express my concern over what appears to be collusion by the Mahwah Patch in a coordinated effort to attack and undermine my candidacy for the Mayor of Mahwah. As you know, an event was advertised as a “Mayoral Candidates Night” by
the Rio Vista Homeowners’ Association, and it was held last evening, 10/24. Initially I agreed to participate because I was told that the event was “for Rio Vista residents only,” a fact emphasized in their advertising. I was also told that the candidates would have the opportunity to respond to questions from that group.

The day of the event, documents came into my possession clearly indicating that was not the case. These e-mails, attached, were authored by David Bagatelle, member of the Rio Vista Association, who was also the Chairman of Laforet’s Blue Ribbon Panel.
The e-mails were distributed to 17 people, 8 of whom do not reside in Rio Vista, encouraging their attendance and providing a list of questions designed to attack me professionally and personally. Your name was first on the distribution list, followed by
Bill Laforet. All of the names on the list were known Team Laforet supporters. It was obvious to me this was a coordinated effort to attack me and publicize it. For these reasons, I declined to attend. It was clearly a rigged ambush disguised as a Candidates’
Night, intended to undermine my candidacy with the help of non-Rio Vista residents, who defied their own “for residents only” rule.

Most troubling was the inclusion of your name on the distribution list. This gave the appearance of collusion by the Patch in this attempted political mugging. That appearance alone raises issues of journalistic integrity since only one reporter was invited and questions were distributed in advance. I hope you would be forthcoming and responsible in providing a clear explanation. The residents of Mahwah deserve this clarity.
