⚽️ World Cup Match #1 at MetLife Stadium is in the books!

Yesterday, the first FIFA World Cup match at MetLife Stadium put months of planning, coordination, and partnership-building to the test for the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management

While fans enjoyed the action on the field, a tremendous amount of preparation was taking place behind the scenes. Staging areas throughout the region were staffed with law enforcement, EMS, fire service, and hazardous materials personnel, all standing ready to respond to any emergency that might occur—whether at the stadium or anywhere across Bergen County.

Through strong partnerships, detailed planning, and a unified commitment to public safety, emergency responders worked together to ensure that residents, visitors, and soccer fans could enjoy a safe and successful event.

🚨 Training & Preparedness in Action 🚨

This past week, Bergen County Office of Emergency Management Emergency Planner Michael Marsh joined the Oradell Office of Emergency Management, Police Department, and Fire Department for a school evacuation and reunification exercise at the Oradell Public School.

The drill successfully tested the school’s ability to safely and efficiently evacuate students and staff to a designated reunification site. Surrounding municipal police departments also participated, helping to ensure the safety and security of the school population throughout the exercise.

Training exercises like these strengthen coordination among emergency responders, school officials, and partner agencies, ensuring a prepared and effective response to emergencies while enhancing the safety of our communities.

The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Bergen County until 9pm this evening.

When:
Late this afternoon into the early evening. Most likely timing for severe weather will be from 5pm to 8pm.

What to expect:
The main threat with any storms will be damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph.
The secondary threat with any storms will be 1 inch hail and a localized flash flood threat especially for the urban environment.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Bergen County starting at noon today through 8pm Friday evening.
What to expect: Heat index values up to near 100 expected. Isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms possible today and Friday during the afternoon and evenings along with a localized flash flood threat.
Impacts:hot temperatures and high humid may cause heat illnesses.

Last week, members from 7 Bergen County fire departments participated in a Swiftwater Technician Course sponsored by the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management. Participating departments included Englewood FD, Emerson FD, Hackensack FD, Harrington Park FD, Oradell FD, Teaneck FD, and Washington Township FD.
Participants successfully completed a qualifying swim test before moving into classroom instruction and hands-on land based training activities, culminating with a full day of practical water operations at Scudders Falls along the Delaware River.
This important training enhances capabilities across Bergen County, ensuring our first responders are better prepared to safely and effectively respond to water and flood emergencies as we enter the summer storm season.
Thank you to the Oradell FD for hosting the classroom training sessions and to County Executive James Tedesco III and the Bergen County Commissioners for their continued support and funding of this critical initiative that strengthens emergency response capabilities throughout Bergen County.

FIFA World Cup Drone Guidelines!!
• World Cup venues and fan festivals are No Drone Zones.
• Flying drones near stadiums is illegal and dangerous.
• Violators will be prosecuted and penalties are severe.
• Leave your drone at home.
• Drones near stadiums? That’s a red card. If you fly illegally, you will be found and prosecuted.
• There will be severe consequences for reckless, careless, or criminal drone use, including fines upwards of $100,000, criminal charges, incarceration, and the confiscation of your drone.
• Safety is our goal. Every fan, every match. A massive multi-layered security plan that includes advanced anti-drone technology is in place to protect fans.

This morning, the Bergen County Office of Emergency Management Fire Coordinators coordinated a Large Diameter Hose (LDH) Task Force drill, bringing together seven engine companies for a critical water supply operation.

During the exercise, crews deployed 800 feet of 5-inch hose from each apparatus, with a draft engine successfully drawing water from the Passaic River and delivering an adequate water supply to a location nearly one mile away to support firefighting operations at a simulated large-scale fire.

Training exercises like this strengthen interagency coordination, enhance operational capabilities, and ensure Bergen County remains prepared to respond effectively to any emergency that may occur.
