Yesterday the volunteer firefighters of Fire Rescue Company 1 had a busy start to the day.

At approximately 3:30am, Company 1 was requested as mutual aid into Tuxedo New York to provide coverage at the Eagle Valley Fire Company while the Tuxedo Fire Department operated at a multiple alarm structure fire. Engine 115 stood by at their firehouse for approximately 3 hours before being released and returning to the Township.

At around 9:15am, Fire Companies 1, 2, and 3 were dispatched to a residence for a reported gas odor and repeated sounds of an explosion. Rescue Engine 117 arrived first on scene and located the source, a malfunctioning pool heater. Company 1 firefighters stretched a handline and began cooling the affected area to prevent fire spread while awaiting the arrival of PSE&G technicians to secure the gas supply.

The third call of the morning came in at approximately 11:00am, with Fire Companies 1 and 2 responding to Ramapo Valley Road for an activated fire alarm.

Job well done by all members who responded to these multiple incidents throughout the morning.

For this week’s drill, Company 1 firefighters focused on pump operations and drafting techniques, with an emphasis on developing our newer pump operators.

Firefighters rotated through practical evolutions utilizing both Engine 115 and Rescue Engine 117, practicing drafting operations and flowing water through various configurations. Proficient pump operations and drafting skills are essential capabilities that ensure our engines can establish and maintain adequate water supply during fireground operations, particularly in areas where municipal hydrants are unavailable.

Consistent training on these fundamental skills ensures our pump operators remain prepared to support fireground water supply operations both within Mahwah Township and throughout our mutual aid region.

Earlier this afternoon, Rescue Company 1 along with Fire Companies 2, 4, Mahwah EMS, and Bergen County Sheriff responded to the Ramapo Reservation for a reported injured hiker.

Upon locating the patient, Mahwah EMS assessed the injuries and requested Rescue Company 1 to extract the patient. RS-1 responded with a stokes basket litter with wheel system. Upon arrival, they made their way up Bear Swamp Road to the patient’s location along the trail. Rescue Engine 117’s crew also arrived on scene with extra manpower.

After reaching the patient, firefighters coordinated with Mahwah EMS to package the patient for safe removal from the rough terrain. The patient was successfully transported down the trail on a UTV and turned over to a waiting ambulance for transport to an area hospital.

All units operated on scene for approximately 90 minutes before returning to quarters.

For this week’s drill, the members of Fire Rescue Company 1 drilled on lifting and stabilization techniques.

Various tools from Rescue Engine 117 were used such as airbags, struts, winch, slings, and cribbing.

Continuous practice mastering the tools and equipment we carry keeps us sharp for when they are needed in real life situations.
