Click It. Don't Risk It.
May 15, 2024
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Click It, Don’t Risk It high-visibility enforcement effort. The national seat belt campaign, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, is May 20-June 2, 2024.
It is perceived everyone wears a seat belt, but data shows that’s not true. In 2023, 45% of traffic fatalities in Iowa were unbuckled; that translates to 123 lives lost. In a GTSB survey of over 1,450 Iowans, 88% reported always buckling up in the front seat; only 67% always buckle in the back seat.
“No matter the type of vehicle you’re traveling in, where you’re seated, or what type of road you’re driving on, the best way to protect yourself in a crash is to buckle up,” says Brett Tjepkes, GTSB Bureau Chief. “Unfortunately, many families are suffering because their loved ones did not follow this simple step. If this enforcement effort alerts people to the dangers of unrestrained driving, we’ll consider the mission a success.”
If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up, please talk to them about changing their habits. Help GTSB and law enforcement spread this lifesaving message before one more friend or family member is killed. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to buckle up.
GTSB works with city, county, state, and local organizations to develop and implement strategies to reduce death and injury on Iowa roads using federally funded grants.

GREEN BEER AND DRIVING DON’T MIX

March 6, 2024

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa March 13-21 to remind drivers: Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the United States extend as far back as the American colonial period. Today, it’s one of our nation’s most popular holidays, celebrated with festivals, parades, and parties. These celebrations frequently feature themed cocktails and green pints, and the amount of alcohol consumed is higher than average. People are more likely to make poor decisions as a result, including driving while intoxicated.

Because St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday, we anticipate alcohol consumption will increase throughout the weekend. We ask everyone to celebrate responsibly. Last March, there were 26 traffic fatalities on Iowa roads. Almost 40% of those occurred the week of St. Patrick’s Day (March 11-19, 2023).

GTSB also reminds drivers to watch for pedestrians. An increase in alcohol consumption and pedestrian traffic can be a dangerous combination. If you’re on foot, cross streets in well-lit areas and use the crosswalks.

GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes says, “Don’t turn a day of fun into a tragic and devastating time by driving while intoxicated. It’s vital people plan ahead. If you wait until you’ve been drinking to make a smart decision, you might not. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, or use a rideshare service. Our law enforcement partners will be looking for impaired drivers.”

If you find yourself drunk and stranded with your vehicle, give the keys to a sober driver who can safely drive you home. Remind your friends to never get in the vehicle with a drunk driver. If you have a friend who is about to drive drunk, take away their keys and help them get home safely.

END OF SUMMER TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT
August 10, 2023
DES MOINES, Iowa - Last year, during the final weeks of summer (August 1-September 4, 2022), there were 40 traffic fatalities in Iowa; 30% of those fatalities were alcohol/drug related*. To prevent future tragedies, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement to decrease impaired driving. August 18- September 4, agencies across the state will be participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility enforcement project. You’ll see officers working together during this time to take drunk/drugged drivers off the road. No matter how you plan to celebrate the end of summer, make sure you plan to do it safely.
“We want drivers to understand it’s law enforcement’s first priority to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to plan ahead,” says GTSB’s Law Enforcement Liaison Randy Kunert. “The Drive Sober campaign is an awareness effort to spread the message that impaired driving is illegal, and it takes lives. Let’s make this a partnership between law enforcement and drivers: help us protect the community and put an end to this senseless behavior.”
There are plenty of options to help impaired drivers get home safely; designate a sober driver or call a taxi/rideshare. If available, use your community’s sober ride program. If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

IF YOU FEEL DIFFERENT, YOU DRIVE DIFFERENT
‘420’ ENFORCEMENT

April 12, 2023

DES MOINES, IA — Ma*****na laws are changing across the country. What hasn’t changed are the legalities behind impaired driving. In Iowa, recreational consumption and possession of cannabis is illegal. On April 20, also known as ‘420’, there may be an increase in cannabis consumption. To help keep drug-impaired drivers off the road, the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with law enforcement to remind drivers; drug-impaired driving is dangerous and illegal. If You Feel Different, You Drive Different.
In Iowa, from 2020-2022, preliminary data shows 36% of impaired driving fatalities involved drug use. If you think being high won’t affect your driving, you’re wrong. It has been proven ma*****na can slow reaction times, impair cognitive performance, and make it more difficult for drivers to stay in their lane.
GTSB’s Todd Olmstead, coordinator for Iowa’s Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) Program, says, “High, stoned, or wasted: it doesn’t matter what term you use, if you are impaired, do not get behind the wheel. Our DRE Experts assist local law enforcement in the detection of drug-impaired drivers. If you think you can get away with driving high, you’re mistaken.”
Those who plan to consume cannabis on ‘420’ (or any day) should not drive. If you find yourself drug-impaired and stranded with your vehicle, give your keys to a sober driver. If you have a friend who is about to drive high, take the keys and help them get home safely.
By working together, we can save lives and help keep Iowa’s roads safe.

The DEA Drug Drop Off went very well this past weekend. The DEA picked up 25.8 pounds of pills and another 24.4 pounds of liquids, from the Madrid Police Department that was collected. Thanks for using this drop off to dispose of these outdated medications. Be safe.
