Did you know the Wisconsin State Capitol Police has been serving the people of Wisconsin since 1897? That's more than 125 years of protecting this iconic landmark and the individuals who work and visit here every day.

We invite you to take a look at the history behind our department and learn how we've grown and evolved over the generations: https://statecapitolpolice.wi.gov/Pages/History.aspx

The Wisconsin State Capitol Police Department is one of the oldest police departments in the State of Wisconsin. The first of three Capitol buildings erected in Madison was constructed in 1837, when Wisconsin was still a territory that covered modern-day Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and parts o...

This week, we observe National Police Week. For us, it began last Friday with the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial, Inc. ceremony, honoring Wisconsin officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. It was a powerful and humbling reminder of why we serve.

National Police Week has been observed every May since 1962, when President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the surrounding week as a time for the nation to honor those who wear the badge. Each year, law enforcement communities across the country pause to remember the fallen and recognize those who continue to serve.

We are honored to have the memorial located on the N Hamilton Street corner of the beautiful State Capitol building. We invite you to visit and take a moment to honor each of the 294 names etched into the stone.

Our Capitol Police officers walk past the memorial each day, and we will never forget those who went before us.

This week, we proudly recognized two incredible members of our team for their years of dedicated service to the State of Wisconsin. Captain Abby Onsgard was honored for 15 years of service, and Chief David Erwin was recognized for 30 years of state service which began with Wisconsin State Patrol, and continues with State Capitol Police since 2012.

We are grateful for everything they bring to this team and to the people of Wisconsin every single day. Congratulations!

We are incredibly proud of Office Management Specialist Katelynn Updike for completing the year-long DOA Emerging LEADER program!

Katelynn brought the same dedication she shows every day here to this experience, and it shows. Well done.

When we say we invest in people first and things second, this is what it looks like. Professional development, specialized training, encouragement, and support are all standard issue at State Capitol Police.

This morning, Corporal Jose Mayorquin and his explosives detection K-9 partner, Otter, joined state employees and their children in the Assembly Chambers for Take Your Child to Work Day.

Days like this are special. Parents get to bring their kids into the spaces where they work, and we get to be part of showing them just how remarkable those spaces are. Well done, team!

This week, we celebrate and appreciate the dedicated professionals working in our Dispatch and Monitoring Centers. Our dispatchers are an essential part of our department, serving as the communications backbone of the Wisconsin State Capitol Police, providing 24/7 coordination of calls for service, alarm monitoring, 365 days a year.

In 2025 alone, our small, but mighty team of just seven dispatchers and two supervisors helped coordinate more than 27,000 calls for service. That kind of commitment doesn't go unnoticed. Thank you to our telecommunicators for the critical role you play in keeping our team connected and our community safe. We invest in people first, things second. It's who we are.

The first Saturday Market on the Square of 2026 is tomorrow, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone out there!

Expect a cool and mostly dry morning with temps in the low 50s - perfect weather to browse the booths and stock up on fresh, local goods.

Give yourself a little extra time, as parking and traffic around the Square can get busy on market days. Most importantly, have fun and don't hesitate to say hello to our officers - we love seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones.

See the Dane County Farmers' Market post below for everything you need to know before you go!
