Today is A Day Without Child Care, a day meant to highlight what our families, workforce, and economy would look like without the people who care for our children every day.
Before serving in the Legislature, I owned and operated a 24/7 childcare center in Milwaukee. I know what it means to care for children with patience, skill, and love while also stretching every dollar, working long hours, and carrying the weight of families depending on you. Childcare providers do far more than watch children. They teach, comfort, feed, clean, plan, protect, and create safe spaces where children can grow and thrive. Too often, they do that work for wages that do not reflect the value they bring to our communities. Many providers are forced to sacrifice their own stability to keep care affordable for working families.
That is not sustainable. Wisconsin cannot say we value children, working parents, and strong communities while leaving childcare providers to shoulder this crisis alone. We need real, sustained investment in child care so families can find care, providers can stay open, and workers can earn the wages they deserve.
