I attended the American Legion Post 333 and VFW 9362 2026 Memorial Day Ceremony in Sun Prairie with my father, Nick Hysell, a Vietnam veteran.

As it is ever year, the ceremony was poignant and reminded us of the ultimate sacrifice many of our fellow Americans have made and continue to make.

Wisconsin has among the top ten highest property tax rates in the United States. The cause of our high taxes is not free-spending schools and municipalities. Instead, it’s the simple math of Republican fiscal policies. The Legislature stopped indexing the amount of money it sends to schools to inflation. In other words, the state has collected increasing amounts of state income and sales taxes from us, but simultaneously refused to return the full amount back to pay for the services we need. That is what is causing the need for operating referendums.

I was happy to oppose the surplus deal because it did nothing to solve this structural property tax problem. I cannot in good conscience brag to my constituents about giving some of them $300 (seniors living solely on Social Security would have gotten $0) while supporting policies that force homeowners to raise their property taxes by thousands of dollars.

The Capitol Times sums up nicely how the surplus deal was bad for Wisconsin schools and taxpayers. Passing an election year gimmick that blows a hole in state's budget is not what we were elected to do.

Editorial: The editorial board applauds the Legislature's rejection of the back-door surplus deal. It's time to break the structural deficit cycle.

I opposed the surplus spending bill because it wasn't a serious response to the very real problem of spiraling property taxes.

"This bill will not fix Wisconsin's property tax problem. Over the past 16 years, it's been Republican fiscal policy that has led to our crazy high property taxes because of decisions made by the majority in this body," Hysell said."

"People in my district are getting crushed just for the luxury of going to work or buying groceries. So 300 bucks simply isn't enough, because it doesn't fix the structural problem, and you guessed it, you're going to pay thousands more in property taxes in the years ahead,"

MADISON (WKOW) -- Talks in the Wisconsin legislature are underway as members of the State Assembly and Senate discuss Democratic Gov. Tony Evers' bipartisan $1.8 billion tax relief bill that
