You may have already heard about Make History Madison - an organization working to help residents tell the local history of the places and spaces in Madison that mean something to them - especially as we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Coming up on June 10, we'll dive into the history of a space that is personal to all of us - your home! In this workshop, participants will find out how to get started researching the history of their homes.

For big-picture context, historian Angela Richardson will lead participants through a step-by-step process to become house history detectives! Using houses in nearby neighborhoods as examples, she’ll introduce online tools and demonstrate techniques for discovering facts about your own house.

Hoping to find old photos of your house and its prior inhabitants? Angela will also present search methods you can try when seeking visual records of your house and former residents. Registration is requested and you can sign up online at madpl.org/america250

Thanks to Make History Madison - a Whoseland? Project - and the East Side History Club for their partnership on this event!

Earlier this week we attended the Black Girl Magic Conference hosted by Black Girl Magic Educational Services Inc. alongside our friends at Madison Reading Project, Inc. . We love this partnership because it allows us to double our efforts and our impact! We team up with Madison Reading Project each year to give away two free books to each attendee of the conference, and it's always such a thrill to see the joy on their faces as they sift through the selection of titles on offer and realize that they get to take home two for their very own.

More than 600 girls between 4th-8th grade attended this year's conference, which means 1200 high-quality, diverse books found new homes.

We're so grateful to the generous donors who give to the One Book At A Time fund through the Madison Public Library Foundation because these funds specifically go toward supporting literacy opportunities and free book giveaways in the community. Thanks to all the kids and adults who stopped by, chatted about WE READ, discussed upcoming Library programs, and grabbed books. It was such a highlight of our week!

The Wisconsin Book Festival is in it's 25th Anniversary season and as they wrap up their spring, it's already breaking records! We feel so lucky to have been the hub of the book festival for more than decade because year-over-year it's the largest program that we host at Madison Public Library in terms of attendance.

This spring alone, the Wisconsin Book Festival hosted 26 events that brought in more than 9,000 people! Last week Caro Claire Burke's event for her debut novel, Yesteryear (a must read) in partnership with A Room of One's Own Bookstore had more than 450 people in attendance and the very next night, the Wisconsin Book Festival team co-hosted an event with the Milwaukee Public Library for former US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo that saw a crowd of 300 people attend. It's clear that Wisconsin loves books!

For the past 25 years, the festival has been connecting storytellers with story lovers. Thank you for continuing to show up, ask thoughtful questions, celebrate authors, and share stories that you’ve discovered through the festival with other readers in your life.

The Wisconsin Book Festival remains free and open to the public thanks to the generous support of the Madison Public Library Foundation through donors and festival membership holders like you!

Don't forget to get your tickets for the Book Club Cafe featuring bestselling author Paula McLain!

This annual Friends of the Madison Public Library fundraiser is an ode to book clubs, reading, and libraries, where book groups can come together and hear from an amazing author while enjoying light refreshments and picking up a complementary Book Club Favorites booklet. This little gem includes personal recommendations from local book clubs, library staff, and other local readers sharing their favorite books of the year, as well as the titles that got them talking the most! It's basically a curated guide for starting your own book club!

Tickets for Book Club Cafe are $25 and pre-registration will close next week on Wed, June 3. Then we'll gather together on Tues, June 9 to enjoy McLain's talk at Central Library from 7-9pm. You won't want to miss it! Visit madpl.org/bookclubcafe to learn more and register to attend.

Save the Date! On June 12, join us for a Juneteenth film screening of The Blackening (2022), with a discussion to follow presented in partnership with Sherman Church.

In this horror/comedy, seven black friends reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway, only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who has a vendetta. Will their street smarts and knowledge of horror movies help them stay alive? Probably not.

The screening begins at 5:30pm - no registration required.

The Madison Arts Commission, Madison Public Library, and Madison Parks are pleased to announce the City of Madison has commissioned Nate Page, a Wisconsin-born-and-raised artist, to create an outdoor sculpture for the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park.

Page's "The Passage of Being" was selected as the public art piece to be placed at the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park after a multi-step process that included soliciting bids for artist designs, narrowing down finalists, getting thousands of resident responses through an online survey, and visiting nearby Sandburg Elementary School for direct feedback from youth.

"We are thrilled to have the Nate Page sculpture The Passage of Being as the signature piece at the Imagination Center at Reindahl Park! This piece will beautifully reflect the park surroundings while also acting as a portal for visitors to move through. The Passage of Being offers multiple entry points, is open to many different interpretations, and we see it as the perfect fit for the new Imagination Center at Reindahl Park," said Trent Miller, The Bubbler at Madison Public Library Program Coordinator.

"The Passage of Being" has a two-sided presence. When seen from the Imagination Center, the front represents the strength of community opening a pathway toward nature. The community is represented by the layered planes of color, which are drawn from the national flags of prominent immigrant communities in Northeast Madison. On the reflective side, the sculpture opens outward, reflecting the surrounding park and its activity onto the library's architecture. You can read more about the selection process, Nate Page, and "The Passage of Being" at madpl.org/reindahl
