Deputies used a drone to locate a suspect who ran from a traffic stop early Tuesday morning.

The stop was initiated at 1:35 AM after deputies spotted a reckless driver on CTH M in Westport. The 19-year-old driver, Tavon Conley, refused to stop the pickup truck he was driving. A brief pursuit followed, but he crashed into a tree at Harper Road and Troy Drive in Madison and ran from the scene.

Deputies immediately launched a drone equipped with a thermal camera and located him walking on the grounds of the Central Wisconsin Center on Knutson Drive. City of Madison Police Officers also responded to the crash and assisted in taking Conley into custody. It was ultimately determined that the Ford F-150 he was driving was stolen, and he was currently on parole.

Conley was initially taken to a local hospital but has since been released and is now held in the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of vehicle theft, resisting, and obstructing.

Brooklyn Elementary School gave Deputy Grumke quite the send-off as he moves on to his new role as Sergeant. The love the staff and students have for him is clear. The teachers even had a “dress like Grumke day.

The positive effect he has had in Brooklyn is a testament to his character and compassion.

We're proud to announce the promotion of 4 outstanding deputies to the rank of sergeant! 📣💙

Sgt. Merrick Grumke was hired in 2017. He is a Stop the Bleed instructor, has served as a booking deputy and a Jail Training Officer, and was the first contract deputy in the Village of Brooklyn, where he has served since 2021.

Sgt. Nate Teuscher also started with the Sheriff's Office in 2017. He has been a Jail Training Officer and a Booking Deputy. Since 2021, he has been the evening contract deputy for the Villages of Black Earth and Mazomanie.

Sgt. Timmothy Smith started with the DCSO in 2021. After working in Security Services, he served as the contract deputy for the Village of Windsor. He is also a member of our Hazardous Devices Unit, otherwise known as the Bomb Squad.

Sgt. Mark Anderson has worked in law enforcement for 25 years. He has experience as a detective, as a Field Training Officer, and as a Narcotics officer. He currently serves the Village of Windsor. Sgt. Anderson is also on our Special Events Team.

The situation was peacefully resolved at approximately 9:45 PM.

Dane County deputies are negotiating with an armed, barricaded man in crisis, on Town Hall Road in the town of Springdale. This post will be updated as more information becomes available.
