Happy Birthday Wisconsin! Today, we celebrate 178 years of statehood. As a fifth generation Wisconsinite, Iโ€™m so proud to call this state home.

Over the past few months, I have traveled 900+ miles across Wisconsin to celebrate this yearโ€™s record Common School Fund distribution and meet directly with the students, educators, and librarians impacted by these investments.

This year, the Common School Fund distributed a record-breaking $73.5 million to Wisconsin public schools. Since I became Chair of BCPL in 2019, Common School Fund distributions have grown by more than 103%, with more than $414.5 million distributed to schools statewide.

Every public school district in Wisconsin receives support from the Common School Fund, and for many school libraries, it serves as their sole source of funding for books, technology, digital resources, and learning tools. From Eagle River, Rhinelander, Wausau, Ashwaubenon, Madison, Eau Claire, Mineral Point, New Glarus, and Milwaukee-area schools, I saw firsthand how these resources are helping students thrive no matter their zip code.

At a time when school districts across Wisconsin are facing budget challenges, rising costs, and repeated referenda, these investments are helping schools continue to provide students with the resources they need to succeed.

Today, we honor the courageous Americans who gave their lives in service to our country. We remember their sacrifice, reflect on their enduring legacy, and hold their loved ones in our hearts.

I hope everyone has a meaningful and safe Memorial Day!

Last week we had archivists from the Wisconsin Historical Society visit our office to help us stay up to date on best practices for record keeping. Inter-agency collaboration is fundamental for effective governance, and it was great to collaborate and share knowledge on how we can continue preserving and managing important state records effectively.

It was great to visit Mineral Point Elementary School last week to present a Common School Fund check supporting their school library and students across the district.

Hear from school librarian Ms. Uppena about how this funding has impacted students and strengthened their school library!

It was great to join the Wisconsin County Clerks Association Lunch and Learn today! Our office gave a presentation on a new feature in our modernization system designed for clerk seals and signatures. These updated systems will allow for secure, digital, and efficient processes.

The BCPL (The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands) team came to Madison for an offsite meeting this week, which was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the important work ahead and to plan for building a stronger future for Wisconsin.

BCPLโ€™s work to prudently manage public trust funds and support public education and local communities across the state is critical, and it was great to see the team come together with a shared commitment to that mission.

This week is Public Service Recognition Week and Municipal Clerks Week, a chance to thank the people who keep our communities and state moving forward every day.

Municipal Clerks are truly the Swiss Army knives of their communities. Clerks wear many hats and keep local governments running smoothly year-round. From elections and licensing to records, public notices, and so much more, their work is essential to strong local government.

Across Wisconsin, more than 30,000 state employees work in service to others, helping deliver essential programs and support for families, businesses, and communities. Our public servants deserve recognition and gratitude for their commitment to our state.

Thank you to all public workers for your dedication, professionalism, and service.
