2025 Crime Statistics and Public Safety Data

We publish crime statistics and public safety data to keep our community informed about local trends and police activity. These reports help provide context about public safety conditions and the work of your police department.

These statistics reflect reported incidents and police activity within the City of Madison. Crime data can fluctuate year to year, so multi-year averages are provided for context. Increases in calls for service or enforcement activity do not necessarily indicate increased crime; they often reflect proactive policing, reporting practices, or community engagement.

📢 Attention Madison Residents: Winter Weather Advisory! ❄️🌬️

As we prepare for the upcoming ice storm, we want to keep our community informed about how we manage street, tree, and power line issues.

Our Public Works Department is dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens during winter weather events.

🚨 Response Guidelines:

- Wind Speeds: When winds reach speeds over 20 mph, our Public Works crews will delay their response to ensure safety. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will take action as soon as conditions permit. We kindly ask residents to stay home to allow Police👮🏻‍♂️, Fire🧑🏼‍🚒, and Public Works👷‍♂️ to respond effectively when it’s safe to do so.

- Ice Accumulation: Any ice accumulation of 1/4 inch or more will also prompt our teams to assess and address potential hazards, as conditions allow.

⛑️Safety First!
Please stay indoors during severe weather, and avoid any areas with downed trees or power lines. If you notice any hazardous conditions, report them immediately by calling 911.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we work to keep Madison safe this winter!

Stay warm and safe! ❄️❤️

🎃 Halloween Safety Tips from the Madison Police Department 🎃

As Halloween approaches, we want everyone in Madison to have a fun—and safe—evening! Here are a few reminders before you head out trick-or-treating 👇

👻 For Parents & Trick-or-Treaters:
• Plan your route ahead of time and stick to well-lit neighborhoods.
• Wear bright or reflective clothing, and carry a flashlight or glow stick.
• Walk—don’t run—between houses, and always use sidewalks and crosswalks.
• Stay in groups, and keep younger children with an adult.
• Check all candy before eating anything.
• Avoid masks that block your vision—face paint works great instead!

🚗 For Drivers:
• Slow down in neighborhoods and stay alert for children crossing the street.
• Avoid distractions like your phone.
• Be especially cautious during peak trick-or-treat hours (6–8 PM).

🏠 For Homeowners:
• Keep walkways clear of decorations and tripping hazards.
• Use battery-operated candles in pumpkins instead of open flames.
• Turn on your porch light if you’re handing out candy.

We’ll have extra officers patrolling throughout the evening to help keep everyone safe. If you see anything suspicious, please call (706) 342-1200 or dial 911 in an emergency.

🎃 Have a safe and happy Halloween, Madison!

CITIZENS’ POLICE ACADEMY

Over the past six weeks, members of our community participated in the inaugural Citizens’ Police Academy. Throughout the program, they gained insight into the inner workings of the police department, including uniform patrol operations, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, crime scene processing, the judicial system, Constitutional law, use of force, and criminal procedures.

We extend our sincere thanks to these dedicated citizen cadets for their commitment to learning and their support of our department. Their engagement helps build a stronger, more informed partnership between law enforcement and the community.

Last night, we proudly celebrated their graduation from this comprehensive course. Congratulations to all!

Looking ahead, we plan to offer the Citizens’ Police Academy twice a year. Be on the lookout for details and the application process this winter.

We would also like to thank Chick-fil-A, Madison Produce, Marcos Pizza, Chipotle, Madison Chophouse, and Ricardos for providing dinner for the cadets and staff during these six weeks.

FYI

Two trees will be removed early next week on S. Main Street between Washington and Jefferson streets. One is in front of TJ Bishop's Men's Store, and the other is in front of 1st Franklin Financial. These trees are roughly 40 years old and are "aging out" for a downtown sidewalk. You may have noticed where the roots are breaking up the brick sidewalk and limbs have dropped. The raised beds will be replaced with tree grates to widen the sidewalk and improve ADA/pedestrian accessibility. New trees will be planted 12-18 months later when the old roots have decomposed enough to allow room for growth. 🌳🌳

🔍 Transparency Matters

The Madison Police Department is proud to announce the launch of our new Transparency Page. This online resource is part of our continued effort to build trust, strengthen relationships, and keep our community informed about how your police department operates.

We have started by posting our written directive policies. These are the rules and procedures that guide our officers in their daily duties. We encourage you to take a look and learn more about the standards we follow to ensure professionalism, fairness, and accountability.

This is just the beginning. In the coming weeks and months, we will expand the page with additional tools and information to give residents even greater insight into our work and our commitment to public service.
