The Madison Police Department would like to remind residents about important e-bike rules and regulations taking effect on October 1, 2025.

Under the new Connecticut law, gas-powered, electric, and hybrid motorized devices may be classified based on wattage.

E-Bike Classifications:

Class 1: Pedal assist only, no throttle, up to 20 mph
Class 2: Throttle and/or pedal assist, up to 20 mph
Class 3: Pedal assist only, up to 28 mph

Important reminders:

Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted for riders under 16.

E-bikes are not allowed on sidewalks, multi-use trails, or bike paths.

Per Town ordinance, bicycles are not allowed on sidewalks.

Devices producing more than 750 watts will be classified as motor-driven cycles and will require a valid driver’s license to operate.

Devices producing 3,700 watts or more will be considered motorcycles and will require a motorcycle endorsement, registration, and insurance.

Parents should be aware that many high-powered e-bikes sold online or through third-party marketplaces may exceed these wattage limits. Once the law takes effect, those devices may fall into the motor-driven cycle or motorcycle category.

Violations may result in fines, Youth Diversion Team referrals, juvenile court referral, or the device being seized, depending on the circumstances and safety concerns.

Please ride safely, follow the law, and respect others on our roadways and in our community.
