REMINDER: GOLF CARTS & LOW-SPEED VEHICLES ARE NOT PERMITTED ON MADISON ROADS
The Madison Police Department would like to remind residents and visitors that golf carts are not permitted to be operated on public roads within the Town of Madison.
This prohibition also includes Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs).
Connecticut law gives local traffic authorities the ability to regulate or prohibit the operation of low-speed vehicles on roads within their jurisdiction. The Town of Madison, through its Local Traffic Authority and Board of Police Commissioners, prohibits the operation of LSVs on Madison roads.
For reference, Connecticut General Statutes § 14-289m, Operation of low-speed vehicles. Penalty, states:
(a) A person may operate a low-speed vehicle on a highway with an established speed limit of not more than twenty-five miles per hour, unless the traffic authority of any town, city or borough or the Office of State Traffic Administration, as provided in section 14-298, prohibits or otherwise limits the operation of low-speed vehicles on any highway under the jurisdiction of such traffic authority or office.
Additionally, C.G.S. § 14-300g provides that golf carts may only be operated on public roads when specifically authorized by the local traffic authority and subject to the requirements established by that statute. The Town of Madison has not authorized golf cart operation on its public roads.
