Today, we celebrate Flag Day and reflect on the meaning of our nation’s flag and the values it represents.

If you’re out and about, head down to Lamplighter Park on the riverfront and check out the new flags proudly displayed along the riverfront.

A special thank you to the generosity of the Madison Riverfront Development Committee, the Jefferson County Republican Women’s Club, and Lisa Ferguson for helping make this beautiful addition possible. We also extend our appreciation to the City Street Department for installing the flags.

Our Re-Envisioning Main Street Project continues!

Work will begin this Monday, June 15, 2026, on the West end of Main Street between the Heritage Trail/Clifty Connector Trailhead and just west of Marine Street. During this time, expect delays due to traffic control measures in place during the workweek. Work should last approximately 30 days.

Improvements include the construction of new sidewalks along the north side of Main Street leading to the Madison Connector System Trailhead; installation of a new crosswalk and speed table (a traffic-calming feature similar to a speed hump with a flat surface for safer pedestrian crossings); paving and restriping of the entrance and exit serving the Elks Lodge, Eagle's Haven Golf Course, and Mary Kay McCubbin Sport Court; installation of additional street lighting; and updated wayfinding signage to improve navigation throughout the area.

We helped "unearth a story" at yesterday’s Touch-a-Truck event — the official kickoff to the Jefferson County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program!

Our street department, Madison Police, a few of our fire stations, and other community partners brought out their vehicles for kids to explore, climb on, and enjoy, helping connect families with the people and equipment that keeps our city running. Mayor Bob Courtney also stopped by to say hello and even handed out a few Crystal Beach day passes to some lucky young readers.

Events like this highlight the power of reading and the important role libraries play in fostering lifelong learning, curiosity, and community connections. We’re grateful to Jefferson County Public Library - Madison and Hanover for organizing such a wonderful event and allowing us to be part of the celebration!

As we wrap up the month of May and National Historic Preservation Month, we want to take a moment to recognize the importance of preserving the places, stories, and architecture that make Madison so special.

Earlier this month, Deputy Mayor Tony Steinhardt had the honor of presenting a proclamation on behalf of Mayor Bob Courtney during Historic Madison, Inc.’s “Find It in Madison” event, celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Madison’s National Historic Landmark District designation.

The proclamation highlighted the role historic preservation plays in strengthening community pride, supporting tourism, enhancing livability, and protecting the unique character of Madison for future generations. It also recognized the many organizations, businesses, and individuals whose continued investment and dedication help preserve Madison’s rich history.

We are proud to celebrate Madison’s historic legacy and grateful to everyone working to ensure its story continues for generations to come.

MAYOR COURTNEY ATTENDS NATIONAL FLOOD RESILIENCY SUMMIT IN WASHINGTON, D.C. | Mayor Bob Courtney traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to participate in the American Flood Coalition’s Elected Leadership Summit, where more than 60 mayors, council members, and county officials from across the country gathered under the theme “Resilience Starts Local.”

The summit brought together local elected officials from communities across the nation to discuss flooding, infrastructure investment, disaster preparedness, and long-term resiliency planning. Leaders shared flood solutions being implemented in their communities, learned from peers facing similar challenges, and met with congressional offices on Capitol Hill to advocate for federal support for local infrastructure and resiliency efforts.

“The City of Madison understands both the opportunities and challenges that come with our location,” said Mayor Bob Courtney. “Flood resiliency and infrastructure investment are important conversations for communities like ours, and I appreciated the opportunity to represent Madison, learn from leaders across the country, and bring our community’s priorities directly to federal leaders.”

While in Washington, D.C., Mayor Courtney participated in discussions focused on flood mitigation policies and infrastructure planning. He also met with Indiana senators and members of Indiana’s congressional delegation to advocate for keeping Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge open.

The summit followed recent flooding along the Walnut Street and U.S. 421 corridor in late April, which impacted portions of the Madison community and reinforced the importance of continued investment in infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and resiliency planning.

“Communities across the country are dealing with many of the same issues we face here in Madison,” Courtney said. “It was encouraging to see local leaders working together, sharing ideas, and advocating for solutions that help protect our communities and prepare for the future.”

“Investing in our parks is an investment in the health, wellness, and quality of life of our community. These improvements at Welch Park will create opportunities for this generation and the next to gather, play, and enjoy this space for years to come,” shared Mayor Bob Courtney.

A special thank you to former Mayor Welch’s family for joining us for this occasion.
