WORKING FOR YOU IN WASHINGTON COUNTY: A resurfacing project is underway on WIS 144 in West Bend to improve safety.

Crews were able to temporarily reopen the highway for Memorial Day weekend to help ease traffic and allow an annual fundraising event take place in Boltonville.

“We worked closely with the event organizers and local first responders to make it happen,” WisDOT Project Manager Kurt said. “We know how significant the Memorial Day weekend is for the Boltonville community, so we were happy to accommodate such an important event.”

Crews are currently in the second stage of construction, working between WIS 28 and the Washington/Sheboygan County line.

Project improvements include:
• Resurface WIS 144 between Skyline Drive in West Bend and the Washington/Sheboygan County line
• Replace existing guardrail
• Plant a living snow fence (shrubs)
• Replace curb ramps

The project is scheduled for completion by late summer. More details: https://projects.511wi.gov/144westbend/

THAT’S NOT GOING ANYWHERE: Hauling a trailer this weekend? Make sure the tires, axles, bearings, and lights are all in working order. Attach two safety chains in a crisscross pattern between your vehicle and trailer. Double-check your chains don’t drag on the ground – as this can cause wildfires.

If you’re hauling loose items, tie down your load with netting or straps so there’s no potential they fall out and become a road hazard.

LANSING BRIDGE UPDATE: The center span of the new IA 9/WIS 82 Mississippi River Bridge will be installed on June 11-12. The project will prompt the closure of the free car ferry and restrict other traffic on the river.

The project will continue in future weeks and months with additional construction on the bridge superstructure, deck and other features. The new bridge is expected to open to traffic in 2027. More details: https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/about-wisdot/newsroom/news-rel/060526-lansingbridgespan.aspx

SAFETY SUCCESS: The intersection of WIS 28/67/175 and County TW in Dodge County saw a 100% decrease in injury crashes after being converted from an all-way stop into a roundabout.

In the three years before the project, there were four injury crashes at the intersection. In the three years after the roundabout was installed, there were no injury crashes reported.

Due to their design, roundabouts have proven to reduce vehicle speeds along with high-risk conflict points, resulting in fewer fatal and severe injury crashes. Read more about the benefits of roundabouts: https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/safety-eng/roundabouts/default.aspx

Today is Heat Awareness Day in Wisconsin. With temperatures on the rise, remember that temperatures can become dangerous quickly inside a vehicle. On an 80-degree day, temperatures in a parked vehicle in direct sunlight can climb about 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.

Never leave your child or pet unattended inside a car. Make it a habit to check your backseats before leaving your vehicle.

ICYMI: WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman joined the Forest County Potawatomi Community last week for a grand opening celebration at the site of a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station.

The EV charging station is the first in the U.S. to be installed on Tribal lands with funding from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. It’s one of 78 projects awarded so far at fuel retailers, grocery stores, hotels and restaurants throughout the state, as part of the effort to build out a reliable network of charging stations on heavily traveled routes.

We're committed to safety in Wisconsin work zones and our teams worked together with the Wisconsin State Patrol (WSP) Air Support Unit to enforce speeding and aggressive driving laws in the I-94 work zone near Eau Claire yesterday (May 28).

Speeding, tailgating and distracted driving are the leading causes of work zone crashes in Wisconsin. During the two-and-a-half-hour detail, troopers conducted a total of 21 traffic stops including:

➡An average speed of 79 mph for traffic stops involving speeding
➡13 stops for 15-19 mph over the limit
➡8 stops for 20-24 mph over the limit
➡Highest speed at 83.7 mph
➡Other traffic stops included drivers following too close or completing unsafe lane changes

We all play a role in keeping work zones safe -- not only for construction workers, but fellow drivers too. Please, follow posted speed limits, leave room to brake, and pay attention to the road ahead.

WisDOT when we see a proper zipper merge: 🤯 😃 🥳 ❤️ 👋 🙌 💪 🤝

If you see a lane closure ahead, avoid merging early! Use both lanes up until the merge point. Studies show the zipper merge keeps traffic flowing and can minimize congestion.
