Green Bay Packers Give Back Some Love to Area Families and Farmers
Leaders from several area non-profits were honored Wednesday with grants from the Green Bay Packer Foundation at Lambeau Field. In addition to the grant awards, attendees received tours of Lambeau Field, the Hall of Fame and met Packers luminaries including Vonnie Holliday.
“While we sincerely appreciate the support we get from all our friends, we feel especially honored to receive support from the Country’s most beloved football team, the Green Bay Packers.” says Chris Brockel, Director of Healthy Food For All of Dane County. “Their support for expanding our Buy One For A Neighbor program will help market farmers thrive and neighbors in need access more fresh local produce.”
Buy One For A Neighbor engages community members to actively address multiple community concerns simultaneously. BOFAN staffs a booth at local farmers’ markets asking shoppers to buy produce from farmers and immediately donate it to a local pantry. BOFAN’s primary goals are to help local farmers thrive, provide healthy food to struggling families and get people directly involved in making our markets and communities stronger.
“Real, long-term food security is rooted in strong local farms. Many local small farmers lost significant revenue from cuts to local produce purchasing programs that benefited schools and pantries.” according to HFFA Field Organizer Joe Mingle. “By mobilizing the broader community to pitch in and Buy One For A Neighbor, we can all help farmers prosper, make sure produce is available for neighbors in need and get more people engaged in finding impactful, on-the-ground solutions.”
In addition to BOFAN, HFFA has many innovative projects detailed in our comprehensive 2025 Food Crisis Action Plan. In our on-going efforts to unite community partners around a shared vision and plan, it has already been distributed to city and county officials, farmers, pantries, related non-profits and many others.
“Shoppers love being engaged in doing something positive and directly helping their favorite farmers and neighbors in need. Farmers love it because it generates revenue but also lets them know the community cares about their success.” adds Brockel. “And, of course, the families who receive the donated produce deeply appreciate that neighbors made a special effort to choose things specifically for them.”
