Healthy Food For All Dane County

Healthy Food For All Dane County Healthy Food for All collects local produce from area farms and surplus prepared food from local catering and retail operations.

We distribute this high quality but highly perishable food to pantries, meal sites and directly into low income neighborhoods. Healthy Food for All is a community based, grassroots food recovery project working to ensure all Dane County children and families can access affordable, healthy and culturally appropriate food to achieve better health outcomes and a higher quality of life. We specialize

in the collection of bulk packaged prepared food and local farm produce. By diverting potential waste from the landfill or compost pile we are helping to solve Dane County's food insecurity issues while helping to keep food out of our local landfill. We function both as a network of existing community organizations and also as a membership organization for activists interested in the work. Collaboration with a broad set of community partners is the basis of our work and will only grow in importance as the project scales up. The immense need we face requires the participation of all people of good will who are willing to do their part to fight hunger while helping our environment.. In that spirit, HFFA also seeks to be a home for volunteers and activists with a special interest in this area of work. Many County residents are keenly aware of these issues and just as keen to help but need a way to plug into the movement. We are organizing and mobilizing residents across the County to build the movement to ensure Healthy Food For All!

HFFA would like to thank all the folks who purchased soup to donate during the 2025/26 Soup's On! initiative. 493 quarts of soup were purchased and donated to support families in need. Additionally, the particpating restaurants donated over 150 more quarts of soup during their weekly order drop offs at FEED (Food Enterprise & Economic Development)

Thank you to Madison Locally Sourced for taking the lead on the initiative. See you next year!

A big end of the year thank you to Crossroads Community Farm, LLC and their CSA members for their initiative in growing produce specifically to donate to local food pantries. Thank you as well to the hard working HFFA staff who helped with pick up and delivery of the donations along with all their other food recovery tasks. Our community is healthier and better fed when all parts of the food system work together.

Green Bay Packers Give Back Some Love to Area Families and Farmers

Leaders from several area non-profits were honored Wednesday with grants from the Green Bay Packer Foundation at Lambeau Field. In addition to the grant awards, attendees received tours of Lambeau Field, the Hall of Fame and met Packers luminaries including Vonnie Holliday.

“While we sincerely appreciate the support we get from all our friends, we feel especially honored to receive support from the Country’s most beloved football team, the Green Bay Packers.” says Chris Brockel, Director of Healthy Food For All of Dane County. “Their support for expanding our Buy One For A Neighbor program will help market farmers thrive and neighbors in need access more fresh local produce.”

Buy One For A Neighbor engages community members to actively address multiple community concerns simultaneously. BOFAN staffs a booth at local farmers’ markets asking shoppers to buy produce from farmers and immediately donate it to a local pantry. BOFAN’s primary goals are to help local farmers thrive, provide healthy food to struggling families and get people directly involved in making our markets and communities stronger.

“Real, long-term food security is rooted in strong local farms. Many local small farmers lost significant revenue from cuts to local produce purchasing programs that benefited schools and pantries.” according to HFFA Field Organizer Joe Mingle. “By mobilizing the broader community to pitch in and Buy One For A Neighbor, we can all help farmers prosper, make sure produce is available for neighbors in need and get more people engaged in finding impactful, on-the-ground solutions.”

In addition to BOFAN, HFFA has many innovative projects detailed in our comprehensive 2025 Food Crisis Action Plan. In our on-going efforts to unite community partners around a shared vision and plan, it has already been distributed to city and county officials, farmers, pantries, related non-profits and many others.

“Shoppers love being engaged in doing something positive and directly helping their favorite farmers and neighbors in need. Farmers love it because it generates revenue but also lets them know the community cares about their success.” adds Brockel. “And, of course, the families who receive the donated produce deeply appreciate that neighbors made a special effort to choose things specifically for them.”

HFFA is thankful for our partnership with Crossroads Community Farm, LLC and the wonderful support families in need receive from them and their CSA members who help keep the vegetables growing.

HFFA appreciates all the local farm and farmers market support we receive, which was especially bountiful in 2025.
