Voices of Wisconsin- Abigail Tessman

Advocacy has become a major part of my life over the last 12 years. After graduating from the cutting-edge program at Edgewood College in 2014, I continued pursuing opportunities in education, transportation training, disability inclusion, and public speaking.

One area I am especially passionate about is helping people with disabilities build confidence and independence using public transportation. Through my business, Transit2GO, I help train individuals and groups on how to navigate city bus systems and explore their communities more independently.

I have also continued growing as a self-advocate by speaking with community members, educators, leadership teams, and policymakers about accessibility, inclusion, and the importance of creating welcoming spaces for people with disabilities.

Advocacy is not always about one big moment. Sometimes it is about the everyday conversations, trainings, and experiences that slowly help create change over time. I look forward to continuing that work in the years ahead.

Big day for me and Transit2GO.

Today I had the opportunity to give a more advanced overview presentation during a DVR team meeting.

Moments like this remind me how much growth can happen over time — taking lived experience, advocacy, transportation knowledge, and community involvement and turning them into opportunities to help others build independence and confidence.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to share more about Transit2GO and the work I continue to grow through disability advocacy, transportation training, and community education.

Excited to keep moving forward and see where the journey leads next.

As a Gosling Grad, I wrote in to the Watertown Daily Times,
As someone who attended Watertown schools, it is frustrating and heartbreaking to watch a district that once promoted inclusion and creativity move toward limiting what students can perform in a public educational setting.

Students in the Watertown High School band have spent months preparing for their spring concert, only to now face the possibility that a piece could be removed because of political controversy surrounding its inspiration. That is unfair to the students and discouraging for educators who work hard to challenge and engage young people through the arts.

Public schools should not take partisan stances on which music is acceptable simply because some community members disagree with the historical background connected to a composition. Music education has always gone beyond entertainment. It teaches discipline, teamwork, history, culture, empathy, and critical thinking.

I also worry about the long-term message this sends to teachers and future educators. Across Wisconsin, schools are already struggling with teacher burnout and staffing shortages. Talented educators leave classrooms every year searching for workplaces where they feel trusted and supported. Some even turn to entrepreneurship and advocacy work, just as I did through my own journey after graduation.

Communities should want schools that attract passionate teachers, musicians, and leaders — not environments where educators fear backlash for introducing students to challenging or meaningful works of art. Students benefit when teachers are empowered to educate, not pressured to avoid anything that could become politically controversial.

I remember a school system that encouraged students to explore ideas, ask questions, and grow through experiences in music and the arts. I hope Watertown schools continue to be a place where students feel supported in learning, performing, and expressing themselves without politics overshadowing their hard work.

Today I completed the Transportation Academy Transit Tour alongside leaders from Madison Metro Transit.

I was honored to serve as part of the tour team and share my perspective as the founder of Transit2GO, where I help people with disabilities confidently and independently navigate public transportation.

Transportation is more than getting from place to place—it’s access, independence, and community connection. Grateful for the opportunity to help lead conversations about accessibility, rider experience, and inclusive transit in Madison.

Today officially marks 12 years since graduating from the cutting-edge program at Edgewood College.

Since 2014, I’ve been pursuing two careers while continuing to grow through education, disability advocacy, transportation training, public speaking, and community involvement.

Time truly flies. Some days it still feels like I’m starting at level one, but looking back reminds me just how much growth can happen over time.

Cheers to everyone who has been part of the journey over the last 12 years — and cheers to what’s still ahead.
