As we reflect over the last 5 years when Growing Together began, we are thankful and appreciative of the Gompers and Black Hawk Community, our North Side Community and Community Partners we have networked with along the way to enhance our outdoor play space. Our heartfelt thanks extends to each one of you that helped to bring this dream to fruition.

A senior at East High this year, James Hughes is working to complete his Eagle Scout Project to improve the outdoor space at Gompers and Black Hawk by planting 5-7 large Oak trees (shade and beauty) for our students and community to enjoy; which we desperately need. James is over half way to his goal! Consider supporting this project through his GoFundMe Page that you can access at http://www.gofundme.com/jameseagle2015.

Hi Friends and Family, As many of you know, I am currently working on my Eagle Scout Project that consists of planting 5 to 7 Oak trees in the backyard of Black Hawk Middle School, my old middle school. Currently, the back field is barren, sun dry and there is no shade at all for students to sit...

Last May Growing Together partnered with Best Buds to enhance our garden space in front of the schools; adding a Rain Garden planted in front of Gompers Elementary School with educational signage, a beautiful rain barrel hand painted by students and enhancing the garden space around the Gompers sign.

Last week about a dozen volunteers gathered and spent a couple hours sprucing up the blooming Rain Garden. The group focused on removing weeds, adding mulch donated by Kim Sowers, adding river rock to slow the entry of rain water and moving a few plants around the garden for better positioning.

As a community service project, Girl Scout Troop #2697 assisted with all aspects of the new garden and to this day they continue to maintain the garden by watering and weeding as needed. A Rain Garden not only beautifies an area, but is a valuable experience for our awareness of environmental issues, right in our neighborhood, and are lessons that stay with us for a lifetime. All community members are welcome to support the maintenance of the gardens. Should you have any perennials or extra mulch you are looking to get rid of, consider donating to our gardens by replying to this post.

And finally the unveiling of the playground. Look at all these kids rush to the playground. Have you ever seen so many kids on a Lunar Blast (spider man climbing net)? Truly amazing! Thank you to all.
