A little late on the post, but it is officially spring seeding season! This spring we have just over 315 acres to do in 3 counties!
If you are having a seeding done this spring (or even in the fall) be sure to have all of your acres worked/ tilled up to eliminate w**d pressure and other vegetative competition, and to help the drill plant better when we do get there. Remember, the ideal seeding surface is a post-harvest soybean field: smooth, clear, and firm.
Spring seeding has its’ own challenges because everything else is growing too! So, oftentimes we have to compete with the common w**ds we all deal with.
To aid in establishment, we suggest mowing 2/3 times after planting or a post planting spray of glysophate or round up 5-7 days after planting, to kill existing vegetation. But not after 7 days! We don’t want to risk spraying chemical on germinating native seeds. After that, burning, mowing, and grazing if your program allows it, are great ways to manage native seed. Remember, native seed loves disturbance!
Spring is a particularly busy time for us in the SWCD office, most of us are in the field during the day, getting your seedings and tree plantings done! So if you don’t catch us, consider calling and scheduling an appointment, and we’ll fit you in. See you around!
