Lake County Fatal Crash

What: Single vehicle vs. pedestrian fatal crash
Where: 223rd Street and 451st Avenue, 2 miles northeast of Ramona, South Dakota
When: 7:20 p.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2026

Driver 1: 17-year-old male from Nunda, South Dakota, no injuries
Vehicle 1: 2014 GMC Sierra
Seat Belt Used: Yes

Driver 2: 70-year-old male from Astoria, South Dakota, fatal injuries
Vehicle 2: Cub Cadet riding lawnmower
Seat Belt Used: N/A

Lake County, S.D.- An Astoria man died Wednesday in a single vehicle vs. pedestrian crash near Ramona, South Dakota.

Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2014 GMC Sierra was traveling westbound on 223rd Street near the 451st Avenue intersection. At the same time, a man was working on a Cub Cadet riding lawnmower on 223rd Street after it became separated from a tailgate mounted carrier. The driver of the GMC struck the lawnmower and the pedestrian. The man sustained fatal injuries. The driver was not injured.

The investigation is ongoing. All information released is preliminary

Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket and supported the department. In the last year, we were able to buy multiple new chain saws for our trucks, 3 sets of water rescue suits, water rescue gear, inflatable rescue boat, and we are finishing up a new tender truck. Without our local support, we wouldn't be equipped with the gear we need to serve Madison and all of Lake County.
