Sometimes, the biggest impact comes from the smallest moments. The Hall family recently shared with us how one City employee has made a difference for their 3-year-old son, JJ.

“Shawn McGillivary has been an absolute blessing to our family. What started as my son, JJ’s, fascination with garbage trucks and the crew that does the work quickly turned into a friendly wave and greeting each week between Mr. Shawn and my 3-year-old son. Now, Mr. Shawn’s arrival at our house each Thursday on the garbage truck is a can’t-miss event and a weekly tradition where we greet and chat with him each week.

Shawn is a kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable man that my son considers not only a friend but a true role model. The time he takes to greet and speak with JJ means everything to us. Once he leaves, JJ peppers us with questions all week such as, ‘When is Mr. Shawn coming back? What is Mr. Shawn doing?’ We have affectionately named JJ the ‘President of the Mr. Shawn Fan Club.’

Shawn’s friendly and caring demeanor shines through strongly. He is a hard worker with a positive attitude. We are all so grateful for the kindness and generosity he has shown our son JJ and our entire family. He is so deserving of this honor! Thank you, Mr. Shawn!” —The Hall Family

Shawn’s kindness and willingness to take a little extra time to connect with a young resident are a great example of two of our City values, Community Focus and Respect, in action. Way to go, Shawn!

The City Commission will hold its next Quarterly Work Session on Monday, September 14th, at noon at Madison City Hall, 503 S Highland Avenue.

Commissioners will hear a presentation from Police Chief Justin Meyer on the Madison Police Department’s use of license plate reader cameras, including how the technology is used, policies and procedures in place, and examples of how it has assisted local investigations. A representative from Flock Safety will also join the discussion virtually to answer questions.

The Commission will also review the City’s Communications Survey Action Plan, developed following the public communications survey earlier this year. The plan focuses on three primary goals: improving access to timely and clear information, increasing understanding of local government, and strengthening trust and confidence in local government.

Quarterly Work Sessions are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend and be part of the conversation. Join us in person at City Hall or online through Zoom.

City staff enjoyed the opportunity to serve at The Gathering Meal! It was a great chance to spend time together outside of our usual roles, give back to the community we serve, and help serve a warm meal to our neighbors.
