On National Compost Day today, we're shouting out one of our Troy Farm Collaborative members: Troy Composting! This group of dedicated volunteers collect food waste from a number of local restaurants (by bicycle!) to turn into nutrient-filled compost through their composting operation at Troy Farm. They composted 57,805.9 lbs of organic material last year in 2025! We're glad to partner at Troy with this group that's doing such good work in our local food system.

The gardening season is underway at the Badger Rock Community Garden, with our garden kickoff last month and our annual plant giveaway this weekend! Thousands of plants grown with love by our Rooted farm teams went out into the community that will grow into thousands of pounds of fresh produce for families this season. As always, it was a beautiful scene of community, plants, and joy!

A big thank you to Klein's Floral & Greenhouses and Keene Garlic for your plant donations to the Badger Rock Community Garden Plant Give Away! These plants are already making their way to the gardens of many of our neighbors!

Thank you to the TruStage volunteers who gifted us their time last week to lend a hand at our Badger Rock urban farm and Troy Farm! Between weeding, mulching, planting and transplanting, they helped us with the many tasks a garden has as we kick off the growing season. We appreciate the positivity, enthusiasm, and opportunity to build community connections that comes with this group's visit every spring!

Our Rooted in Urban Agriculture Youth Employees who were awarded a grant through the By Youth For Youth (BYFY) program this spring to build 10 new wooden raised beds for the Badger Rock Community Garden! It was truly a team effort, with our Badger Rock Middle School students, UW Badger Volunteers, and the Rooted Farm & Education team all working to get the old raised beds disassembled and the new ones built.

Through this project the Youth Employees are getting hands on STEM experience, helping ensure families can continue to grow their own produce, and creating educational opportunities for younger students and the community by leading workshops on how to build the raised beds for our garden classes with BRMS and in our virtual community workshops.

In honor of Wisconsin School Garden Day yesterday, we joined City of Madison Deputy Mayor Katie Crawley, Wisconsin State Representative Francesca Hong, and Ben Stanger from Green Box Compost at Lake View Elementary School to help students spread fresh compost and plant starts grown at Oakhill Correctional Institute. It was a fund day celebrating school gardens, and everyone got their hands in the dirt!

Today is Wisconsin School Garden Day! This day celebrates educators, students, families, community leaders, and all people who have made garden-based education a reality throughout the state. Governor Tony Evers has officially declared Thursday, May 21, 2026 to be the 8th annual Wisconsin School Garden Day. You can participate in Wisconsin School Garden Day by doing some type of garden-based education activity today or this week–anything that involves kids engaging with a garden or activities around planning, planting, observing, art, literature, and STEM can be a way to celebrate Wisconsin School Garden Day!
