WOW! The Madison City Council voted UNANIMOUSLY to pass a crucial resolution supporting a union voice for UW Health nurses, and calling for a fair union election before the end of the year. Nurses send heartfelt thanks to Alders Lindsay Lemmer and Patrick Heck, lead sponsors; cosponsors Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and Alders Syed Abbas, Arvina Martin, Brian Benford, Michael E. Verveer, Grant Foster, Tag Evers, Yannette Figueroa Cole, Regina Vidaver, Juliana R. Bennett and Nasra Wehelie; and to all the other members of the council for their support. Big thanks also to South Central Federation of Labor President Kevin Gundlach for his powerful testimony.
At the online hearing, nurses gave moving testimony about how the pandemic has aggravated the systemic crisis at UW, and why they need a strong, independent union voice to ensure the highest patient care standards. This adds to the overwhelming support UW RNs have received from scores of elected officials recently, including Governor Evers, Lt. Governor Barnes, Attorney General Kaul, dozens of state legislators, and the Dane County Board of Supervisors.
“You all have a soft spot in my heart. My mom was a nurse and was in a union, and it was really important to her. This is an important matter to UW Health, and the UW area in general, where there's only a few people making the decisions that affect thousands of others. So I'm glad we're pushing this forward, and you all are important, thank you for your service."
-Alder Juliana R. Bennett, UW Student
